King Kejeruan Metar Bilad Deli Holds Free Mass Circumcision for Residents as a Form of Social Concern

Tradition, Mutual Cooperation, and Compassion in the Framework of Free Mass Circumcision

Medan, July 6, 2025 — The 11th King of Kejeruan Metar Bilad Deli, YTAM Tengku Muhammad Fauzi, once again held a free mass circumcision event attended by 200 children from underprivileged families. This activity was held as part of a series of events commemorating the Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1447 H, and also coincided with the school holidays.

This mass circumcision marked the conclusion of a series of four similar activities held by Kejeruan Metar Bilad Deli in various locations, namely:

  • June 28 at MDTA Al-Washliyah Pajak Rambai, Medan Labuhan
  • June 29 at TK Ar Rahman Islamic School, Jalan Kapten Rahmad Buddin, Medan Marelan
  • July 5 at Dusun I, Sei Baharu Village, Hamparan Perak District
  • July 6 at SMP Negeri 1 Labuhan Deli, Deliserdang

In its implementation, Kejeruan Metar Bilad Deli collaborated with Royal Prima Marelan Hospital and the Indonesian Healthy Gadget Movement (GGSI), led by Datok Prof. Ridha Darmajaya. "We are doing this for the indigenous community while preserving Deli Malay customs, which are steeped in the values of togetherness and mutual cooperation," said Tengku Muhammad Fauzi.

He also expressed his gratitude to all parties who helped make this activity possible, including medical personnel, donors, village and sub-district officials, village heads, village heads (datok) (religious leaders), village heads (datok limpah kurnia), village heads (datok timbalan), village registrars (penghulu), and the entire community.

What is interesting about this mass circumcision is the preservation of the "Julang Anak" tradition, a procession in which children to be circumcised are carried on the shoulders of their fathers, older brothers, or uncles, accompanied by the "marhaban" (a traditional Indonesian traditional dance) and the "flour-to-the-fresh" (flour-to-the-fresh) procession. This tradition embodies noble values and high morals, and provides a valuable and unforgettable experience for the children. In fact, the datok (heads of the village administration) who attended wore traditional Malay attire and helped carry the children whose families were unable to attend. "This tradition of carrying children must be preserved because it leaves a lasting impression, instills moral values, and strengthens Malay cultural identity," said Tengku Fauzi.

Meanwhile, Datok Yan Djuna, who holds the title Datok Setia Nara Seni Diraja Kejeruan Metar Bilad Deli, hopes that the public will become more aware of the history and important role of traditional institutions today.

"Kejeruan Metar Bilad Deli has existed since the 17th century, with its territory at that time located in the Mabar region. Social and cultural activities like this must continue to be passed down to the next generation of Deli Malays," he said.

After the circumcision ceremony, each child received a gift and a certificate of appreciation, and had the opportunity to immortalize their happy moment in a photo booth prepared by the committee.

"God willing, Kejeruan Metar Bilad Deli will continue to benefit the people and traditional communities in Medan and the surrounding areas," concluded Tengku Muhammad Fauzi.
