Holding East Asia Audience: Japan's Forestry Agency Visits UNPRI’s Prima Migrant Center to Expand Global Career Pathways

Open Skilled Labor Pathways And Expand Global Career Opportunities Through The Prima Migrant Center.

Medan, August 21, 2026 — Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI), through its Prima Migrant Center, has reaffirmed its commitment to global workforce readiness by hosting a high-level delegation from the Forestry Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Government of Japan. Held at the UNPRI Main Campus, this strategic dialogue highlights a shared vision to expand international labor mobility and career pathways into the dynamic markets of East Asia.

The distinguished Japanese delegation was led by Mr. Fujiwara Satoshi (Assistant Director Wood Industry Division, Forest Policy Planning Department, Forestry Agency, Government of Japan), accompanied by representatives from the Japan Federation of Wood Industry Associations (Mr. Seto Nobuhisa, Mr. Karasawa Satoshi, Mr. Sumi Hidetoshi), Worlding Co., Ltd. (Mr. Ikebe Shoichiro, Mr. Aoki Shogo), and JICA Expert and Advisor on Foreign Human Resource Placement, Mr. Motoyuki Nishida. The meeting was also attended by North Sumatra BP3MI Head, Police Commissioner Budi Novijanto, S.H., alongside officials from the Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (P2MI). UNPRI leadership was represented by Vice Rector IV Dr. dr. Ali Napiah Nasution, M.K.T., M.K.M., Sp.K.K.L.P.(K).COPC., Vice Rector III Refi Ikhtiari, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., along with university deans and directors.

In his opening remarks, UNPRI Vice Rector IV Dr. Ali Napiah Nasution emphasized that the establishment of the Prima Migrant Center UNPRI is rooted in the university's mission to connect graduates and the wider community with global industries. "We have expanded our collaborative scope beyond local borders into the international labor market. Partnering closely with the government and international stakeholders, the Prima Migrant Center provides comprehensive information, education, legal advocacy, and professional training for prospective Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI)," he stated.

North Sumatra BP3MI Head, Police Commissioner Budi Novijanto, S.H., noted that public interest in working abroad—particularly in East Asia destinations like Japan—has surged, with over 700 North Sumatran workers successfully deployed across sectors such as manufacturing, hospitality, caregiving, agriculture, and plantations. He encouraged local communities to seize these structured government-backed programs to elevate their economic well-being.

The core discussion centered on exploring partnerships under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) or Tokutei Ginou framework, specifically within the wood industry sector newly opened by the Japanese government in 2024. Mr. Fujiwara Satoshi highlighted Japan's critical labor shortage in the forestry sector—projecting a demand of 4,000 workers alongside 2,500 technical intern positions—while praising Indonesian workers for their exceptional diligence, discipline, and adherence to workplace protocols. Furthermore, JICA Expert Mr. Motoyuki Nishida outlined broader opportunities spanning healthcare caregiving to specialized timber processing.

Through the vital framework of the Prima Migrant Center UNPRI, candidates will undergo rigorous preparation, including Japanese language training meeting JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic standards, regulatory orientation, and SSW competency coaching. The visit concluded with a plaque exchange symbolizing institutional friendship and a campus tour showcasing the center's state-of-the-art facilities.

This landmark visit marks a new chapter in UNPRI's dedication to ethical, secure, and professional labor migration. As an excellently accredited university driving internationalization, UNPRI through its Prima Migrant Center stands ready as a strategic bridge for Indonesian talents entering the competitive East Asia workforce.
