UNPRI FKIP Lecturer Becomes Speaker at Unimed’s Creative Journalism Training, Showcasing Synergy Between Education and Student Literacy
UNPRI, Medan - The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) once again demonstrated its commitment to competency and literacy development through the active participation of its lecturer in external education activities.
On Saturday, November 1, 2025, Muhammad Tommy Lumban Tobing, S.S., M.Pd., an FKIP UNPRI lecturer, served as a speaker in the Basic Level Journalism Training (PJTD) organized by the Creative Student Press of Universitas Negeri Medan (Unimed). The activity took place at the Unimed Creative Student Press (Persma Kreatif) UKM Secretariat and was attended by new prospective crew members (CKB) of the student press.
As a speaker, Tommy presented material on “Articles and Opinions,” sharing his knowledge and practical experience in the world of journalism. In his remarks, Tommy conveyed, “I feel honored to be a speaker at this PJTD activity. Based on my experience, I hope this will be a provision for them to discover their talents, both in terms of scientific writing and in developing into future educators or practitioners. I hope this activity can be a good start for cooperation between Unimed’s Persma Kreatif and FKIP UNPRI moving forward,” said Tommy.
Tommy’s presence was not only a means of knowledge transfer but also an inspiration for the PJTD participants. The new prospective crew members had the direct opportunity to learn writing practices, understand the structure of articles and opinions, and hone critical thinking skills. The interaction between the speaker and the participants was interactive, creating an inspiring learning atmosphere that supports student creativity.
Rahma Hidayati, General Leader of the Unimed Creative Student Press, also expressed her appreciation. “This activity is specifically designed to provide new knowledge to the Persma Kreatif CKB. I hope that the presence of Mr. Tommy will be a motivation for the CKB to continuously improve their learning abilities and follow in Mr. Tommy's footsteps as a lecturer or journalist. We also hope that the cooperation between FKIP UNPRI and Persma Kreatif can continue to develop and improve,” explained Rahma.
The Dean of FKIP UNPRI, Dr. Dian Syafitri, S.S., M.Hum., affirmed that the participation of lecturers in academic and non-academic activities outside the campus is part of the faculty’s strategy to expand its network, enhance the quality of education, and encourage high-achieving students. “We fully support the involvement of FKIP lecturers in sharing knowledge and experience, especially concerning literacy and journalism at local, national, and even international levels, as this will provide new inspiration and insights for students,” she said.
This activity related to literacy improvement simultaneously strengthens inter-university relations and demonstrates FKIP UNPRI's capability in bridging cross-institutional collaboration. The active participation of lecturers in training like PJTD also emphasizes UNPRI's position as an excellent socio-technopreneurship campus that focuses not only on classroom learning but also encourages the development of students' soft skills and literacy outside the campus, which impacts society and prepares them for the professional world in the future.
