UNPRI and USU Collaborate in Mangrove Conservation





The Center of Excellence for Mangrove (COE for Mangrove) of the University of North Sumatra (USU) in collaboration with PUI Neuromarketing and PUI Diabetic Care & Tech from Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) held a Summer Course with the theme "Journey Among North Sumatran Mangroves" The opening ceremony of the Summer Course took place on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at the UNPRI Main Campus Hall, Jalan Sampul 4, Medan City. The parties attending the opening of the Summer Course were Prof. Dr. Mohammad Basyuni, S.Hut, M.Si, Ph.D. Head of the Center of Excellence for Mangrove, University of North Sumatra, Vice Chancellor 1 UNPRI Abdi Dharma S Kom, M.Kom, Vice Chancellor 3 UNPRI Dr. Said Rizal SHI, MA, Vice Chancellor 4 UNPRI, Dr. dr. Ali Nafiah Nasution MK, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry USU Dr. Ir. Rudi Hartono, Head of the UNPRI Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM) Edy Fachrial, S.Si, M.Si, CIQaR, Dr. Amy Then Yee, Hui (University of Malaya, Malaysia), Dr. Itchika Sivaipram (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand), and Dr. Virni Arifanti (National Research and Innovation Agency/BRIN)

The opening of the event began with remarks from Prof. Mohammad Basyuni, S.Hut, M.Si, Ph.D. In his remarks, the Chairperson of the USU COe for Mangrove mentioned the significance of the Summer Course event as an integral part of the routine program organized by the PUI Mangrove, University of North Sumatra. He described how this program has become a tradition that plays an important role in increasing understanding and awareness of the importance of mangrove conservation and the role of this ecosystem in mitigating climate change. There are two main activities, namely learning for participants and international community service.

UNPRI Chancellor Prof. Dr. Chrismis Novalinda Ginting MKes represented by Vice Chancellor I Unpri Abdi Dharma MKom welcomed this collaboration as a very positive step. Abdi Dharma specifically emphasized the importance of joint efforts in the context of research and International Community Service, as a form of UNPRI's readiness to play an active role in organizing this program. He said that this activity is not only in the form of classroom learning but also field practice, it is hoped that this Summer Course can lead to sustainable collaboration and organize international service projects in the future. As an international activity, the Summer Course aims to improve research in the fields of Mangrove, Diabetes and Neuromarketing as a synergy between USU and UNPRI. His remarks illustrate UNPRI's high commitment to supporting the sustainability of the Summer Course and providing participants who also consist of foreign students (Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, China) and Indonesian students with valuable opportunities in the fields of research and community service. Thus, this collaboration becomes more meaningful and beneficial for all parties involved.

Participants are expected to gain knowledge from experts in topics such as mangrove ecology, conservation strategies, and the role of mangroves in mitigating climate change. With a combination of classroom lectures and field visits, it is hoped that students will get a holistic learning experience, allowing them to observe and study mangroves directly in their natural habitat.

Not only that, this program also aims to promote ecotourism and ecoprint practices among participants. Ecotourism activities will provide students with the opportunity to explore the beauty of mangrove forests in North Sumatra while supporting sustainable tourism practices. In addition, participants will actively participate in rehabilitation activities, contributing to the restoration and preservation of mangrove ecosystems.

In a separate place, the Head of BPH UNPRI Dr. Tommy Leonard SH, M.Kn, Thursday (07/09/2023) expressed his appreciation for USU's participation in collaborating in realizing mangrove conservation. "We hope that USU's support will further increase understanding of the importance of mangrove conservation," said Tommy.
