Hundreds of UNPRI Students Attend Public Lecture: Adolescent Reproductive Health

Medan, Responding to puberty, which is the phase of development of children into sexual adulthood. which is marked by physical, emotional and sexual changes, or a unique transition period from childhood to adulthood involving changes in various physical, emotional, psychological, social and cultural aspects, it is very important for adolescents to maintain and preserve the health of reproductive organs.

This was conveyed by Dr. dr. Mangatas Silaen, M.K.M, Sp.OG at a public lecture held on Monday (3/2/2025) at the Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) Campus, Jln. Cover No. 3 Medan.

According to Dr. dr. Mangatas Silaen, M.K.M, Sp.OG, reproductive organ health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in all matters relating to the function, role and reproductive system.

According to Dr. dr. Mangatas Silaen, M.K.M, Sp.OG, the characteristics of pre-adolescent transition include being closer to peers, wanting to be free, paying more attention to their body condition and starting to think abstractly.

That is why Dr. dr. Mangatas Silaen, M.K.M, Sp.OG, explains how important adolescent reproductive education is, such as the lack of awareness of the importance of maintaining reproductive organ health, especially among adolescents. He considers early sexuality education taboo, and global lifestyle changes.

It is explained that there are changes experienced by adolescents during puberty. For teenage girls, there is growth of the uterus and vagina, menstruation, breast enlargement, hips widening, hair growth in the armpits and around the vagina.

Teenager girls can already perform reproductive functions when they have experienced menstruation. Menstruation is the process of shedding the uterine wall accompanied by bleeding, usually occurring for 3-7 days. Normally, the menstrual cycle occurs every 28-36 days. And the amount is 3-4 times changing pads/day.

For that, Dr. dr. Mangatas Silaen, M.K.M, Sp.OG provides healthy tips during menstruation. "Drink lots of water and eat vegetables and fruits, eat foods with high iron content, take iron supplements, change underwear at least 2 times a day, change pads every 4 hours, clean the female organs from front to back, use clean water and dry the female area with tissue," he said.

The typical characteristics of male adolescents who are going through puberty include wet dreams, deepening of the voice, the beginning of muscle mass, hair growth in the armpits, above the lip (mustache), below the lip (beard) and around the penis.

"Tips for maintaining male reproductive organs include wearing underwear that made of materials that easily absorb sweat, change underwear at least twice a day, keep the intimate organ area dry and not damp, eat nutritious food and exercise, avoid smoking and alcohol," he explained.

Dr. dr. Mangatas Silaen, M.K.M, Sp.OG recommends that teenagers do not have premarital sex. Premarital sex is sex that is done by teenagers before marriage because they cannot control their sexual urges.

"This can result in loss of virginity, contracting and transmitting Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), Unwanted Pregnancy (KtD), changes in behavior from good to bad. Avoid the impact of premarital sex by not having sex before marriage, using free time to do positive activities such as sports, art, religion, avoid actions that will cause sexual urges (say no to porn).

"Understand each other's reproductive organs, cancel irresponsible sexual urges, prevent pregnancy outside of marriage and sexually transmitted diseases, socialize according to applicable norms, and maintain cleanliness and health of reproductive organs," he concluded.
