UNPRI, Medan — As part of strengthening industry practice–based learning, students of the Industrial Engineering Study Program at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Prima Indonesia (FAST–UNPRI), took part in a Project Based Learning (PBL) activity carried out in collaboration between Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) and the Medan Center for Vocational Training & Productivity (BBPVP). The training program ran for 20 days, from 15/09/2025 to 08/10/2025, on the 20th floor of UNPRI’s main campus. This activity is a follow-up to the implementation of the UNPRI–BBPVP Medan Memorandum of Understanding under the Ministry of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia, signed by UNPRI Rector Prof. Dr. Chrismis Novalinda Ginting, M.Kes., AIFO-K., and the Head of BBPVP Medan, Faried Abdurahman Nur Yuliono, S.STP., M.M., on 26 August 2025 in the main meeting room on the 10th floor of the UNPRI Campus, Jl. Sampul No. 3 Medan Petisah.

The signing of this cooperation marked a strategic step for UNPRI—as an excellent, socio-technopreneurship-oriented campus in North Sumatra—to strengthen collaboration between education and industry. Through this vocational-based training program, both institutions are committed to realizing a “link and match” between campus and the world of work, while encouraging the application of Project Based Learning (PBL) and Work Based Learning (WBL) that align with the needs of the modern industrial sector.

In this PBL, participation extended beyond Industrial Engineering students to include students from other study programs at UNPRI. A total of 144 students from three faculties—the Faculty of Agrotechnology (FAT), the Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST), and the Faculty of Economics (FE)—joined nine thematic project packages selected by UNPRI to match current industry issues. For FAST–UNPRI Industrial Engineering students, the chosen topic was “Logistics Management through Digital Monitoring and Tracking Technology,” focusing on supply-chain efficiency supported by Industry 4.0 technologies.

Other developed project themes included: hydroponic nutrient automation with a smart nutrition system; management of irrigation systems based on smart farming; development of a web-based tourism information system; operation of generative-AI tools for digital content and business; and optimization of marketing via social media. These projects were designed to provide students with direct, in-depth experience applying industrial concepts, technology, and digital creativity within their respective fields.

The aim of this activity goes beyond MoU implementation: it equips students with vocational and technical skills in manufacturing, while developing capabilities in modern production management. After completing 20 days of PBL preparation, students are required to undergo a further 20 days of Work Based Learning (WBL) field practice at designated locations to apply the theories learned directly in real work environments.

“Students train directly on industrial machines, production-process simulations, quality control, and efficient work systems based on Industry 4.0 technologies. Through this training, they gain a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing production processes and quality control. The program increases students’ job readiness and strengthens UNPRI–BBPVP synergy in developing industrial human resources,” explained Dr. Anita Christine Sembiring, S.T., M.T., Head of UNPRI’s Industrial Engineering Study Program.

This Project Based Learning (PBL) activity is tangible proof of UNPRI’s commitment to realizing an “Impactful Campus,” connecting the academic world with the real needs of industry and the nation. With project- and practice-based learning approaches, UNPRI continues to produce graduates who are skilled, proactive, innovative, creative, adaptive, independent, ethical, and of good character—with an IT-based socio-technopreneurship outlook—ready to compete globally toward a “World Class University” and Indonesia Emas 2045.
