UNPRI Architecture and Civil Engineering Lecturers Collaborate with ISTP to Drive Innovation in Household Waste Processing toward a Healthy and Sustainable Environment in West Medan

UNPRI, Medan – The Undergraduate Architecture and Undergraduate Civil Engineering Study Programs of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI), in collaboration with the Architectural Engineering Study Program of the Pardede Institute of Science and Technology (ISTP), carried out a Community Service (PKM) activity titled “Innovation in Household Waste Processing towards a Healthy and Sustainable Residential Environment in West Medan.” This activity is a concrete manifestation of UNPRI's commitment as a leading international socio-technopreneurship campus in addressing urban environmental issues through an applicable academic approach based on community needs.

The PKM activity, held in Kampung Silalas, West Medan District, on Wednesday (05/11/2025), also supported the assessment for the “2025 Medan City Clean and Healthy Behavior (PHBS) Competition.” The implementation involved synergy between academics, local government, students, and the residents of Kampung Silalas. The event was attended and opened by the Head of Silalas Village, Erwin Munthe, along with the Acting Head of West Medan District, Maswan Harahap, and their staff, who welcomed the contribution of higher education in improving the quality of residential environments.

As the main speakers, three lecturers from both institutions presented material according to their respective fields of expertise. Dr. Ir. Nyimas Yanqoritha, M.Sc. from the UNPRI Civil Engineering Study Program presented the concept of community-based waste management and environmental sanitation. She emphasized that domestic waste management strategies involving active resident participation are key to creating a healthy and sustainable environment, while fostering a sense of ownership and environmental concern among urban communities.

Meanwhile, the Head of the UNPRI Architecture Study Program, Meyga Fitri Handayani Nst, S.T., M.T., explained a healthy residential design approach integrated with household-scale waste processing systems. According to her, proper spatial planning, air circulation, and the placement of sanitation facilities can support clean and healthy living behaviors sustainably. From an applied design perspective, Ir. Indra Kesuma Hadi, M.T. from ISTP Architectural Engineering presented various simple, inexpensive, and easy-to-apply design innovations for daily domestic waste management.

The community service activity received full appreciation from the local government. Erwin Munthe, S.T., M.M., stated that collaboration between universities and the community greatly helps in increasing resident awareness regarding proper household waste management. This was echoed by Maswan Harahap, S.T., who hoped that such community service activities could continue and serve as a model for sustainable collaboration in creating healthy, organized, and environmentally friendly residential areas in Medan.

Beyond the faculty, students from the UNPRI Architecture and Civil Engineering Study Programs were actively involved through field observations, group discussions, and community assistance. This involvement not only strengthens field-based contextual learning but also fosters social concern for urban environmental issues. Through this activity, UNPRI continues to contribute significantly to the achievement of SDGs 4, SDGs 9, SDGs 17 to realize a healthier and environmentally conscious living environment.
