Students of the Public Health Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Medicine, University of Pristina, Implement PBL in the Nutrition Installation of Royal Prima Medan Hospital: A Form of Holistic Field Learning

UNPRI Students Apply Nutrition and Public Health Science Through Field Learning Practices at Royal Prima Medan Hospital

The Faculty of Health Sciences at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing relevant and practical learning experiences for students. Through the Project Based Learning (PBL) program, undergraduate students of Public Health carried out field practice activities at the Nutrition Installation of Royal Prima General Hospital Medan, one of the largest private hospitals in North Sumatra.

This activity, held over several days starting from October 13, 2025, was designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the hospital nutrition service system while equipping them with workplace competencies, particularly in community nutrition, food service management, and clinical dietetics.

Serving Room Activity: Ensuring Food Quality Through Food Quality Control

In the serving area, students were directly involved in the food quality control process before meals were distributed to patients in various units. Their tasks included checking food texture and color, ensuring accurate portion sizes, measuring food temperature, and inspecting the cleanliness of equipment and the serving environment.

This activity taught students how hospital food quality standards are strictly and systematically implemented to ensure food safety and patient satisfaction.

Computer Room: Introduction to Information Systems and Patient Diet Records

Students also conducted patient diet data collection and recap in the nutrition installation’s computer room. They learned how to read medical records, determine diet types based on doctor diagnoses, input patients’ daily nutritional needs, and manage the hospital’s nutrition information system.

This activity emphasized the importance of accuracy and precision in planning menus and monitoring nutrition therapy.

Vegetable Sorting: Ensuring High-Quality Ingredients

In another preparation room, students participated in sorting vegetables and food ingredients. They learned how to select consumable ingredients, assess vegetable freshness, record daily ingredient needs, and understand food safety principles from upstream to downstream.

Impactful Collaboration

The supervising lecturers from the Public Health Study Program of FIK UNPRI expressed their appreciation to Royal Prima General Hospital Medan for providing students with valuable field learning opportunities.

The hospital staff also welcomed the students and viewed the PBL activities as beneficial for preparing future public health graduates to understand real workplace dynamics.

Faculty’s Commitment to Producing Quality Graduates

The Public Health Program at UNPRI continues to expand collaborations with healthcare facilities to enhance the quality of learning. PBL remains a flagship program aimed at strengthening practical competence, improving soft skills, and preparing graduates to adapt to workforce demands.

This activity at the Nutrition Installation of Royal Prima General Hospital Medan demonstrates that real-world experiential learning can provide significant benefits for students.
