UNPRI Trusted to Become the National Herbal Medicine Research and Development Center
UNPRI Officially Appointed as National Herbal Medicine Research Institute to Promote Indonesian Herbal Innovation

The Faculty of Health Sciences at Universitas Prima Indonesia (FIK UNPRI) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the Chairman of the Indonesian Jamu Council, Major General Prof. Dr. dr. Daniel Tjen, Sp.N, on Monday (17/11/2025), at the UNPRI Rectorate Building Main Meeting Room.
During the Focus Group Discussion, the Chairman of the Indonesian Jamu Council, Major General Prof. Dr. dr. Daniel Tjen, Sp.N, entrusted UNPRI to become the National Research and Development Center for Jamu.
The FGD was moderated by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences UNPRI, Dr. Santy Deasy Siregar, SKM., M.Kes., and attended by Deputy Dean apt. Razoki, S.Si., M.Kes., M.Biomed., M.H, Head of the Apothecary Professional Education Program apt. Vera Estefania Kaban, S.Farm., M.Farm, Head of Clinical Pharmacy Program apt. Astriani Natalia Br. Ginting, S.Farm., M.Biomed, Head of Public Health Program Dr. Hartono, SKM., M.Kes, as well as FIK lecturers including apt. Daimah Wardatus Sanaun Harahap, S.Farm., M.Farm, apt. Hariyadi Darmawan Syahputra, S.Farm., M.Farm, and apt. Roy Indrianto Bangar S., S.Farm., M.S.Farm.
In his presentation, Prof. Daniel suggested that UNPRI map the plants in North Sumatra based on ethnobotanical data and conduct in-depth and specific research on the region’s endemic plants, while also preparing human resources and infrastructure to support the national jamu research and development efforts.
Meanwhile, Roy, in his presentation titled “National Jamu Research: Standardization from Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) to Superior Products,” explained seven key steps outlining the complete process from plant identification to final product formulation. The stages include: 1) Determination of commodities and location, 2) Standardized cultivation and farming, 3) Harvesting and post-harvest processing of simplicia, 4) Standardization of raw materials (simplicia), 5) Extraction and standardization of extract, 6) Pharmacological and safety testing (preclinical studies), and 7) Development of jamu formulations.
Responding to Roy’s presentation, Razoki recommended that the Faculty of Health Sciences collaborate with the Faculty of Agro-Technology and other related faculties at UNPRI. Meanwhile, Santy encouraged Hartono to ensure that the Public Health Program also plays a role in the National Jamu Research initiative.
