Event documentation can be accessed at the following link
Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) in collaboration with the Indonesian Breast Cancer Foundation (YKPI) held a socialization event on breast cancer screening and early detection as well as Sadari Practice (self-examination of breasts). This event was held at the Main Hall of the UNPRI Campus, Jalan Sampul 4, Medan City on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.
The event was attended directly by Linda Agum Gumelar, Chairperson of YKPI and staff and Dr. Walta Gautama Sp. B (K) Onk, Chairperson of the Indonesian Oncology Surgeon Association as the main speaker. Meanwhile, the UNPRI Rectorate was represented by Abdi Dharma, M.Kom, Vice Chancellor 1 UNPRI, and Dr. dr. Ali Napiah Nasution MKT, Vice Chancellor 4 UNPRI, representatives of deans, heads of bureaus, heads of institutions and around 120 UNPRI Academicians
In his remarks, Vice Chancellor 4 UNPRI, Dr. dr. Ali Napiah Nasution MKT expressed his hopes for this activity, "I hope this activity shows the joint commitment of UNPRI and YKPI in addressing health issues, especially breast cancer. We invite all Indonesian people to carry out routine self-examinations and consult the nearest health facility if they experience suspicious symptoms."
Next, Linda Agum Gumelar, Chairperson of YKPI spoke about the importance of public awareness of breast cancer. She expressed her hope that fellow UNPRI students could understand the material that would be presented by the resource person regarding the practice of sadari. Sadari is a simple but effective method for detecting changes in the breast that may be an early sign of cancer.
In the socialization event, Dr. Walta Gautama Sp. B (K) Onk, who is also the Chairperson of the Indonesian Oncology Surgeon Association, was guided by Nani Firmansyah as the moderator. In his presentation, the Dharmais Cancer Hospital Doctor revealed the fact that most breast cancer patients who come to Dharmais Cancer Hospital are already in stages 3 and 4 out of 1200 recorded cases. This shows the lack of public awareness of the importance of early detection.
Dr. Walta also expressed hope for progress in the field of therapy. He explained that with more advanced and timely therapy, the chances of survival for cancer survivors, especially in the early stages, can increase significantly. Therefore, early detection is an important key in overcoming breast cancer. This emphasizes the importance of early detection in efforts to overcome breast cancer, because the earlier cancer is detected, the better the chances of providing effective treatment and improving the patient's prognosis. With awareness of the importance of screening and early detection, it is hoped that the public can take appropriate preventive measures and undergo regular examinations to identify breast cancer at an early stage.
As a solution to this problem, Dr. Walta emphasized the importance of socialization regarding early detection and the development of procedures for early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Through this socialization, it is hoped that the public can better understand the early signs of breast cancer, as well as the steps that need to be taken to get an accurate diagnosis.
In the question and answer session, participants asked several questions that were relevant to the discussion topic. Some discussion starter questions include: Can breast cancer in one breast reappear in the future? How is breast examination in areas where health facilities are not evenly distributed? Should every breast cancer be removed, or are there other alternatives?
With the presence of experienced speakers, this socialization event is expected to provide a better understanding to the UNPRI Academic Community regarding the importance of early detection of breast cancer and the methods that can be used to identify it quickly. The collaboration between Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) and the Indonesian Breast Cancer Foundation (YKPI) in this socialization event is expected to have a positive impact in increasing public awareness regarding the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Through education and increasing accessibility of examinations, it is hoped that the number of breast cancer cases detected at an early stage can increase, so that the chances of recovery will be higher.
