The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia Delivers a Public Lecture at UNPRI
This public lecture featuring the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia is an important momentum for UNPRI students to deepen their legal insight, integrity, and professionalism in the world of justice.
Prima University of Indonesia (UNPRI) hosted a public lecture with Professor Sunarto (S.H., M.H.), Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia, as advisor. The lecture, titled "Judiciary in the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia," took place on Wednesday (August 27, 2025) in the main hall on the tenth floor of UNPRI and was attended by 1,000 students from various faculties.
The Chief Justice was accompanied by Dr. H. Siswandriyono, S.H., M.Hum., Chief Justice of the Medan High Court; Dr. Arifin Marpaung, S.H., M.Hum., Chief Justice of the Medan State Administrative High Court; Dr. H. Darmansyah Hasibuan, S.H., M.H., Chief Justice of the Medan Religious High Court; and Admiral Hari Aji Sugianto, S.H., M.H., Chief of the Medan High Military Court.
The Chief Justice and his delegation were warmly welcomed by the leadership of the University of Indonesia I, including Professor Tommy Leonard, S.H., M.Kn., Chairman of the Executive Committee; Professor Chrismis Novalinda Ginting, M.Kes., President of UNPRI; and Dr. Elvira Fitriyani Pakpahan, S.H., M.Hum., Vice President and Dean of the Faculty of Law, and their staff.
In his speech, Professor Sunarto (S.H., M.H.) emphasized the central role of judges as the last bastion of law and justice. He stressed that the value of justice lies in upholding the principles of certainty, efficiency, and fairness.
"Judges are the last bastion of justice and the pillar of people's hope. The saying 'judges are the last bastion' is true because all disputes, whether between individuals, communities, or between people and the state, ultimately end with the gavel and the judge's decision." The Chief Justice explained that judges are the guardians of the values of justice that transcend the text of the law. "Judges are the bridge between the rigid text of the law and the values of justice that exist in society." He emphasized that "the duty of judges is to realize the abstract value of justice and put it into practice."
Furthermore, the Chief Justice emphasized that the professionalism and integrity of judges are absolutely essential to maintaining the legitimacy of the judiciary. He stated that the Supreme Court has implemented several strategic policies, such as transparent recruitment, a strengthened oversight system, continuous development, and digital services, to strengthen judicial accountability and reduce the potential for irregularities.
"A judge's ruling is like the final verdict in a lengthy debate. It can determine a person's dignity, honor, and even their life. When disputes erupt and all avenues of consultation and negotiation fail, people still trust judges to deliver truth and justice. On the shoulders of judges rests society's last hope for true justice. In the hands of judges, law enforcement finds its end, and justice finds its form of realization," he added.
The Chief Justice reiterated that all law enforcement procedures prior to a judge's ruling can be corrected, but a judge's ruling cannot. A ruling can only be corrected by a higher-level ruling, and this is precisely the sanctity of a judge's ruling. "A legal system is inseparably composed of three main components: legal substance, legal structure, and legal culture," he said.
Earlier, UNPRI President Professor Chrismis Novalinda Ginting (M.Kes.) expressed his highest respect for Professor Sunarto (S.H., M.H.), Chief Justice of the Republic of Indonesia, for his willingness to attend and share his knowledge with the academic community.
Professor Chrismis Novalinda (MKes) stated that the presence of the Chief Justice and High Court staff at the UN Seminar on the Judicial System provided a valuable opportunity for the academic community, particularly law schools, to deepen their understanding of the judicial profession and recognize the importance of instilling integrity from an early age through legal education.
“Higher education institutions produce law graduates who will later pursue careers as legal officials, whether judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, or other legal professionals. This means that the roots of integrity issues lie not only in the oversight of the judiciary but also in the early development of character within the academic environment,” he explained.
UNPRI's Rector stated that the launch of this event further solidified its commitment to being an outstanding and competitive institution of higher education, making a genuine contribution to the Indonesian nation by cultivating a generation of legal scholars of high character and integrity.
The Rector emphasized that this public lecture was more than just an academic forum; it was also an excellent opportunity for students, especially law students, to learn directly from the highest leaders of the Indonesian judicial system.
"As a nation ruled by law, Indonesia requires a judicial system that possesses not only strong authority but also high morals and ethics. As the vanguard of the judicial system, the role of judges is crucial. Judges are the beacon of justice and the people's last resort for hope in truth and true justice. Therefore, professionalism and integrity are absolute requirements that must be upheld to uphold fair laws within the framework of the Republic of Indonesia," he emphasized.
In his closing remarks, the Rector expressed his hope that this public lecture would inspire a new spirit among the younger generation of UNPRI law students, enabling them to become guardians of the dignity of the nation's laws and justice.
Also attending the public lecture were I. Nyoman E. Lister, Chief Justice of the Republic of Indonesia and founder of the University of Indonesia I. Professor, M.Kes., Sp.KKLP; Dr. Wienaldi, M.K.M., Director of Medan Royal Hospital 1; Dr. Muhammad Faridz Syahrian, M.K.M., Director of Prima Vision Eye Hospital; Vice-Chancellor of University I of Indonesia, as well as heads and directors of various institutions.
