UNPRI Civil Engineering in Action: Addressing Flood Impacts in Langkat

UNPRI Civil Engineering Students and Lecturers Collaborate to Design Effective Drainage and Construction Solutions.

The devastating floods that swept through Langkat Regency in December 2025 were more than just a temporary natural disaster; they left a lasting impact on the residents of Tanjung Pura District. From damaged housing and contaminated water wells to disrupted education for children whose classrooms were submerged, the aftermath highlighted a critical need for professional intervention. Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) has stepped forward to address these challenges through a deeply integrated academic and social approach.

Puji Syukran, B.Eng., M.Eng., the Head of UNPRI's Civil Engineering Study Program, identified three major concerns arising from the 2025 flood. First, the high vulnerability of public facilities located too close to river corridors. Second, the immediate crisis of safe drinking water access during the recovery phase. Third, the often-overlooked educational disruption caused by damaged facilities. He emphasized that at UNPRI, "Civil Engineering" is envisioned as a "Engineering Solution" that bridges technical specifications with social reality, ensuring that infrastructure serves the ultimate goal of human safety and community readiness.

"Engineering is understood as an effort to design solutions, not just structures. UNPRI Civil Engineering graduates are trained as systemic solution designers who understand that hydrological calculations and structural dimensions must ultimately answer simple questions: do residents have clean water, can children continue to learn, and is their community more prepared when the next flood arrives?"

In a direct response, UNPRI’s Civil Engineering and Architecture departments launched a Community Service (PkM) program titled "Emergency Response: Clean Water Filtration and Post-Flood Recovery Logistics based on Mutual Cooperation." Following a rapid mapping assessment in Paya Perupuk and Pematang Cengal villages, the team installed specialized water filtration units and provided training for local residents to operate these systems independently. This initiative reinforces UNPRI's commitment to SDGs 4 (Quality Education), SDGs 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDGs 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Looking ahead, UNPRI is focused on developing research into stilt house architecture as a hybrid of technical innovation and local wisdom to strengthen disaster mitigation in North Sumatra.
