Able to Increase the Value of Mangrove Products in Tanjung Rejo
A team of lecturers from Universitas Prima Indonesia (Unpri) Medan has completed the Social Collaboration for Building Communities (Kosabangsa) program in Tanjung Rejo Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra.
Collaboration between universities and community groups is directed at increasing the value of managed products, in this case mangrove products.
The role of lecturers from Unpri Medan, in terms of empowering mangrove groups has been carried out in Tanjung Rejo Village.
Through the Kosabangsa program, for three months they have provided assistance to the Srikandi UMKM Group which processes mangrove products into products with added value. The Head of the Kosabangsa Proposing Team from Unpri Medan, Purnama Yanti SE MM, Monday, January 16, 2023 explained about the program funded by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristek Dikti).
"This program targets mangrove-based MSMEs in Tanjung Rejo Village, Percut Sei Tuan District," he said.
So far, the Srikandi MSME group has been carrying out business activities by processing mangrove forest products into food and beverage products.
"But the business that has been run so far is still traditional with limited marketing," he said. Therefore, they from Unpri Medan came to the village, bringing training and mentoring programs as well as assistance with production facilities. "As a result, their products are better, processed more effectively with the tools provided," said Purnama. In addition, they helped improve packaging and brand labels as well as business licensing.
After starting three months ago, this program ended in January 2023. "We consider, in addition to modernizing the equipment, there is progress in terms of packaging so that this product can later be marketed more widely," said Purnama. It was explained that the Kosabangsa program with a proposing team from Unpri Medan, in addition to Purnama, the lecturers involved in the team were also Rafida Khairani SEI MSi, Herlin Munthe SPd MPd, Rudiyanto SPd MPd and Kristi Endah Ndilosa Ginting SE MM. There was also an assessor team from Andalas University (Unand) Padang, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Khasrad MSi, Dr. Ir. Tetria Delia Nova MS and Dr. Yurniwati MSi AK.CA.
Meanwhile, team member Rudiyanto said that a number of processed food and beverage products made from mangroves have been produced and packaged better. Food products such as onion cakes and sticks from jeruju leaves, jam and dodol from mangrove fruits found in Tanjung Rejo Village. While beverage products in the form of syrup are also extracted from mangrove fruits. "Especially the mangrove dodol produced by Srikandi UMKM is quite popular, proven when it was brought to an exhibition, the demand was quite high," said Rudi. Moreover, he continued, the way to process this dodol is more practical and hygienic.
"With the mechanical tools that we provide, production is faster, it doesn't take long and energy to stir the dodol ingredients," he said.
However, Rudi considers that further coaching is still needed for the group to increase its capacity. This is because the program they are running is indeed limited in time and funding.
"Maybe later there will be other parties who can continue the coaching program for the Srikandi UMKM Group," he said.
Not only in terms of production, but how the production results can be marketed more widely.
"So that it can further increase the income and welfare of the people living in the mangrove environment," he said.
