PCR WORKSHOP
Unpri Faculty of Medicine Holds Polymerase Chain Reaction Workshop
The Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Prima Indonesia (Unpri), yesterday held a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Workshop. The event was held at Campus I Unpri Jalan Belanga No. 1, Simpang Ayahanda Medan.
The workshop was attended by the Dean of FK Unpri Dr. Yahwardiah Siregar, Ph.D, Head of MEU FK Unpri DR Dr Umar Zein, DTM&H, SpPD, KPTI, Vice Dean III FK Unpri Dr Ali Napiah Nasution, partner who produces PCR tools Puri Arta Widhiasi, MSi, teaching staff from FK and FKG (Faculty of Dentistry) Unpri, and Masters and Doctoral students of the University of North Sumatra (USU).
Dean of FK Unpri Dr. Yahwardiah Siregar, Ph.D, on that occasion gave a presentation about PCR. According to him, the purpose of this PCR workshop is to introduce molecular technology (seeing everything from the cellular level) which is common in laboratories for many things to FK, FKG staff, and Unpri lecturers. "So, they understand what is called PCR," he said.
He said, to produce staff who have reliable human resources (HR) in this field, his party plans to hold similar workshops regularly.
In this case, Yahwardiah said, his party will introduce a lot of technology. Because in the medical field, technology is very supportive. "So genetic technology, protein technology will be attempted at least every semester we will hold a workshop. So that lecturers will also be open-minded to conduct research".
While for students, understanding science occurs before their eyes, so they understand better, not only understanding through pictures or animations, but seeing directly," said the bespectacled woman convincingly.
Here, Yahwardiyah said, her party is not only focused on conducting research, but plans to reach the level of providing services at the Royal Prima Hospital later. "We hope to provide more services by utilizing molecular technology. And now people have done a lot of research at the molecular level," he said.
With the PCR tool later, his party will focus on tropical diseases, in accordance with the vision and mission of FK Unpri which is specifically for systemic fungal infections that are not easy to diagnose. "In this case, it is not skin fungus such as ringworm, tinea versicolor, but fungi that are in the bone marrow, in the lungs and even in the blood vessels that are complicated to prove. With this PCR technology, it is expected to be able to prove it," he explained.
On that occasion, the partner who produces the PCR tool, Puri Arta Widhiasi, MSi. gave a presentation on how to use the PCR tool (PCR Optimization using Thermal Gradient) and showed the results of using PCR.
Puri also explained the working method starting from making the Master Mix, then the PCR Profile to the final result. Meanwhile, the components provided, said Puri, include Nuclease free water, PCR Buffer dNTPs mix, MgCI2, Primer F (10 uM), Primer R (10 uM) cDNA/plasmid template, and iTaq DNA Polymerase.
Meanwhile, in a separate place, the Head of MEU FK Unpri DR Dr. Umar Zein, DTM&H, SpPD, KPTI, stated the same thing. He added that the purpose of this PCR Workshop was to socialize the examination Bio Molecular for academics, especially lecturers. So, whatever the field of lecturer, he will know that there is Bio Molecular technology, which can detect various types of diseases, can be used as a diagnostic tool, and also used as a guide tool for treatment of several diagnostics of certain diseases.
Umar Zein hopes that if the tool (PCR) is already owned, Unpri will use the tool to serve the community at the Royal Prima Hospital (RS) later. "And this is the advantage of the Royal Prima Hospital later, because it is able to provide services with the PCR method," he said while saying that in North Sumatra there are still few laboratories that can conduct research.
