FKG UNPRI Participates in Organizing BKGN
National Dental Health Month (BKGN) 2015 entered its sixth year. The Faculty of Dentistry of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) was trusted to organize the BKGN and it was held at the Dental and Oral Installation of Royal Prima Hospital, Jalan Pabrik Tenun Medan, Thursday (12/11).
The opening of the BKGN carried the theme of healthy smiles with the elderly as a form of support for National Health Day (HKN), "This activity was the first time that Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) participated in the BKGN which is a collaboration between Unilever and the Indonesian Dentists Association (PDGI) and the Association of Indonesian Dentistry Faculties (AFDOKGI)," said the Dean of FKG UNPRI Prof. Dr. drg. Monang Panjaitan, M.S., MA. Prof. mentioned. Monang, the most prominent dental caries disease in the Dental and Oral Installation of Royal Prima Hospital, with a percentage almost comparable to periodontal disease reaching 90 percent.
According to him, the main cause of cavities and gum disease is plaque, which is a collection of bacteria and food debris in the oral cavity. "Therefore, FKG UNPRI emphasizes the importance of proper tooth brushing behavior at the right time, as well as regular dental check-ups with a doctor every 6 months," said Prof. Monang.
In this activity, FKG UNPRI deployed approximately 180 health workers including dentists, lecturers, residents, nurses and students who will provide dental and oral health services for 1,000 Medan residents. Meanwhile, this activity will take place on November 12-14, 2015. Head of Professional Relationship Oral Care, PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk. drg. Ratu Mirah Afifah GCClinDent. MDSc, said that since it was held five years ago, BKGN has educated 155,451 people throughout Indonesia.
"This year, it is targeted that dental and oral health education can be carried out for another 50 thousand people," he added. The target reach is based on the results of last year's survey which was held in six cities. In general, public awareness of maintaining dental and oral health is quite good. As many as 63% of respondents admitted to brushing their teeth twice a day, and 23% of them brushed their teeth three times a day.
However, the routine of checking dental health with a dentist at least once every six months is not that high. In fact, more than half of respondents admitted to having experienced toothache that disrupted their activities. Some considered it unnecessary, while others reasoned it was the cost.
"However, we are very pleased that BKGN has been able to attract public interest in checking their dental health. We hope that more and more people will brush their teeth at the right time and check themselves with a dentist regularly," said drg. Mirah. On that occasion, drg Floren's seriousness in guiding children on how to care for their teeth and how to brush their teeth properly was evident.
