500 FKKGIK UNPRI Students Attend Public Lecture: Urinary Tract Infection Beyond Basics

Medan, FKKGIK Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) successfully held a public lecture entitled "Urinary Tract Infection: Beyond Basics", Monday (10/2/2025) at the Main Hall, 10th Floor, UNPRI Campus, Jln. Sampul No. 3 Medan, which was attended by around 500 students of the UNPRI Faculty of Medicine.

The public lecture featured resource person Dr. Lee Boon Cheok FRCS (Urol) (Glasg) FEBU, moderated by Dr. dr. Irza Haicha Pratama, MKM, AIFO-K, stated that urinary tract and genital infections are the most common causes in men and women of all ages. Hygiene and sanitation are the most important things in preventing urinary tract infections. The use of antibiotics must be rational, because drug resistance from bacteria reduces the sensitivity of therapy.

"Urinary Tract Infection or commonly called urinary tract infection (UTI) is a medical condition that arises due to infection in the urinary system organs. This infection condition is due to bacteria that attack the urinary tract including the urethra, bladder and kidneys. Although it can attack anyone, both men and women, UTI is more dominant in women," added Dr. Lee Boon Cheok FRCS (Urol) (Glasg) FEBU.

UTI often occurs in women because the urethra in women is shorter than in men. The urethra is a channel that removes urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. The relatively short length of the urethra makes it easier for bacteria in the vagina and anus to enter and move to the bladder.

UTI can be caused by various bacteria, but most commonly by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Bacteria that enter can multiply in the urinary tract. Bacteria usually enter the urinary tract when urinating.

UTI often occurs due to lack of drinking water which can interfere with the urination process. the habit of holding urine can also cause UTI. Cleanliness of the female genital area, especially when urinating, is also related to the risk of UTI. Other causes of UTI can be experienced during pregnancy, menopause or when using contraceptives (KB).

The public lecture was opened by the Dean of FKKGIK UNPRI, Prof. dr. H. Gusbakti RUsip MSc. Sp.KKLP. In his speech, Prof. dr. H. Gusbakti RUsip MSc. Sp.KKLP said that the public lecture was very useful for increasing students' insight.

Some of the participants in the public lecture said that the activity was very useful, especially increasing students' knowledge in the prevention and transmission of urinary tract infections. It's just that the participants hope that if there is a public lecture in English, it will be translated, so that it is better understood by the participants.

The public lecture was also attended by the Founder of Universitas Prima Indonesia Prof. DR. dr. I Nyoman Liester, M.Kes, AIFM, Sp.KKLP, Rector of Universitas Prima Indonesia Prof. Dr. Chrismis Novalinda Ginting, M.Kes., Dean of FKKGIK Prof. dr. H. Gusbakti Rusip MSc. Sp.KKLP (K), PKK AIFM AIFO-K, and a number of other lecturers.
