PC Muslimat NU South Tapanuli Establishes Strategic Cooperation with UNPRI Medan in Eye Health Socialization

In an effort to bring educational and preventive services closer to the community, the Branch Leadership (PC) of Muslimat Nahdlatul Ulama of South Tapanuli Regency has established a strategic partnership with Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) Medan through the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM). This collaboration was realized in the Eye Health Service Socialization activity which was held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the Pintu Padang Health Center Hall, Batang Angkola District.

This activity raised important issues regarding eye health that are often neglected, especially in rural areas. Based on WHO data, more than 80% of visual impairments can actually be prevented or treated if detected early. Therefore, this agenda is aimed at educating the public, especially women, to play an active role in early detection of eye disorders, both in children, the elderly, and themselves.

The Chairperson of PC Muslimat NU South Tapanuli, Dra. Hj. Maisyaroh Dalimunthe, said that the synergy between religious institutions and academic institutions such as UNPRI is a new force in spreading comprehensive health literacy. "We want to build a society that is physically and mentally healthy, and eye health education is a very strategic first step," she said.

A number of competent speakers were presented to enrich the participants' understanding. Prof. Dr. Sri Sulistyawati, SH., M.Si., Professor of UNPRI, emphasized that eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy should not be underestimated. "Early detection is very important. We must raise awareness that eye health is not just a matter for the elderly, but a responsibility across ages," she explained.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of PC NU Tapsel, HR. Ranto Siregar in his speech expressed his appreciation to PC Muslimat NU for the collaboration with LPPM UNPRI Medan, hopefully this collaboration will benefit the community because the sense of sight (eyes) has an important function as a tool to see the creations of Allah SWT which then makes us grateful servants. The Eyes are the Window of the Heart.

Scientific support was also provided by Hj. Dahlia Hartono, M.Sc., a doctoral candidate from the UPT Eye Health Service of North Sumatra Province. She explained the importance of accessing eye screening services which are now available in many health centers. "People often come when their condition is already severe. Through this activity, we hope that the community will be more proactive in checking their eyes regularly," she added.

This event also received support from government officials and community leaders. The Head of Batang Angkola District, Halimatus Sa'diah Siregar, S.STP., stated the readiness of the sub-district government to be an active partner in disseminating health information. "We need community-based programs like this, because the impact is directly felt by the community," he said.

The series of events were packaged in an interesting way with religious and educational nuances. The opening began with the reading of the holy verses of the Qur'an, followed by prayer and singing the national anthem and the Muslimat NU March. The PAC Muslimat NU Sipirok protocol presented a strong collective spirit in mobilizing participants from 11 sub-districts.

The enthusiasm of the participants was seen in the discussion session, where many questions were asked about common vision disorders, including in school-age children. This shows that a scientific approach combined with down-to-earth language is very effective in bridging the gap in community knowledge about health issues. In the long term, this activity is part of a collaborative roadmap between Muslimat NU and UNPRI. The plan is to hold free eye examinations, training for eye health cadres, and mentoring programs for vulnerable communities. This reflects efforts to strengthen community-based health systems that are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in point three: “Healthy and Prosperous Life.”

The activity was closed with a joint prayer and documentation session. The spirit of mutual cooperation and women's empowerment displayed by Muslimat NU Tapanuli Selatan inspired that public health transformation can begin from community spaces that are united in a humanitarian vision. This collaboration is expected to be a model that is replicated in various other regions in Indonesia.
