Bahasa Indonesia Goes Global, Balai Bahasa North Sumatra Holds Strengthening Program for BIPA at the Excellent and Cool University of Prima Indonesia
Balai Bahasa North Sumatra Strengthens Indonesian Language Diplomacy Through the BIPA Program at UNPRI

UNPRI, Medan - The Language Center of North Sumatra Province once again demonstrated its commitment to strengthening the role of the Indonesian language as a global diplomatic language through the dissemination of the Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) Program, held on the 19th floor of Prima Indonesia University (UNPRI) Campus, Jalan Sampul No. 3 Medan, Thursday (23/10/2025). The event, which ran from morning until late afternoon, was attended by 56 participants from various higher education institutions, language centers, and strategic agencies in North Sumatra.
The Head of the Language Center of North Sumatra Province, Dr. Asrif, M.Hum, in his speech expressed appreciation and gratitude to the Rector of UNPRI, Prof. Dr. Chrismis Novalinda Ginting, M.Kes., AIFO-K., for the ongoing support and collaboration. "Indonesian is the unifying language of the 718 ethnic groups in Indonesia. Now, we should be proud because Indonesian has officially become a global diplomatic language through UNESCO. However, our work is not yet done; this pride must be instilled domestically so that Indonesians love their own language," emphasized Dr. Asrif during the event's opening.
This event was also linked to the announcement of a national program titled "Festival Handai Indonesia (FHI)," a competition for foreign nationals (WNA) in Indonesia to demonstrate their love for Indonesian culture and language, presented by Dr. Asrif. In this event, participants from various countries will compete in pantun (traditional rhyming poetry), speeches, and writing in Indonesian. "This is a tangible form of cultural diplomacy. Indonesian is not only a tool for communication but also an identity and sovereignty of the nation," said Dr. Asrif.

In this event, representatives from various institutions were present, including UNPRI, UIN North Sumatra, UNIMED Language Center, BIPA UMSU, UMN, UISU, UNIVA, Potensi Utama, Sekolah Satuan Pendidikan Kerja Sama (formerly International School), APPBIPA North Sumatra, POLMED, Kesbangpol North Sumatra, Strategic Intelligence Agency of the TNI North Sumatra, Alliance Française Medan, Universitas Dharmawangsa, and the Honorary Consul of Timor Leste in North Sumatra, Irawan. The event was also attended by the Head of the General Subdivision of BBPSU, Novi Kristanto, S.H., the Head of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia Representative for North Sumatra, Herdensi, S. Sos., the Head of the Intelligence and Strategy Agency (BAIS) TNI, Infranti Eko Suryanto, the Head of the Ideology, National Defense, and National Character Development Division, Muhammad Andry S.SSTP, M.Si., a representative from the Head of the National Unity and Political Affairs Agency (Kesbangpol), as well as the Head of the Working Team for the Development of the Language Center of North Sumatra Province, Juliana, M.Si., and the BIPA Working Team of the Language and Literature Empowerment Center, the Language Development and Cultivation Agency of Jakarta, Rizky Akbar, S.Pd., MTESOL, who joined remotely.
Medtolia Jurlianti, commonly known as Metty, the event organizer and responsible officer, reported and explained that the dissemination of the BIPA program for Universities and International Schools in North Sumatra held at UNPRI is part of the annual routine series of the Language Center, which previously held BIPA technical guidance at UNPRI last June. The goal, besides supporting the internationalization of the Indonesian language in the academic and cultural diplomacy domains, is also for the institutions present today to understand, manage, and actively participate in the development of the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers learning. "BIPA is the gateway to cultural diplomacy and the Indonesian language in the eyes of the world. Through this activity, we strengthen the synergy between universities and language institutions so that BIPA continues to grow in North Sumatra," said Metty.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at UNPRI, Dr. Dian Syahfitri, S.S., M.Hum., who is also a Language Ambassador, expressed pride that UNPRI was entrusted to host this prestigious event. "We are very happy and grateful to the Language Center. Hopefully, this event will continue and bring new enthusiasm to the world of education to make the Indonesian language the identity of a superior and globally recognized nation," said Dr. Dian while handing over souvenirs to the speakers as a form of appreciation.
