Tzu Ching UNPRI Holds WAVES (We Are Vegetarian and Earth Savior) Event
One Small Step, One Giant Leap Toward a Cleaner World: A Tangible Form of Student Commitment to Environmental Preservation.
The large-scale floods that hit Medan in November 2025 left deep scars on the community and the environment, damaging infrastructure and local ecosystems. A major factor exacerbating the situation was unmanaged waste, which clogged drainage systems and rivers, triggering widespread overflows. In response, Tzu Ching UNPRI (Universitas Prima Indonesia) organized the WAVES (We Are Vegetarian and Earth Savior) program on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the UNPRI Campus on Jalan Sampul, Medan. This initiative supports the Tzu Chi environmental mission, engaging 16 volunteers in waste segregation practices.
The activity began with a door-to-door visit to residents around Jalan Sampul to collect recyclables. This was followed by a workshop led by Budi Dharmawan, a seasoned environmental volunteer. He used interactive games to help participants master waste classification, covering everything from complex plastics to safe electronic waste disposal. "The more people care and get involved in guarding the Earth, the greater the hope that we can all contribute so that the Earth does not get hotter in the future," Budi stated. Coordinator Denys Hadi Suyanto and participant Vallen Efferia emphasized that the program provided vital knowledge on distinguishing recyclable materials through direct interaction and practice.
Inspired by Master Cheng Yen’s teaching: "The way we are grateful for and repay the Earth's kindness is by remaining determined to maintain environmental sustainability," Tzu Ching UNPRI hopes to raise awareness among the youth.
