Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Classroom: Friend or Foe to Learning?

Navigating Technology Disruption and Leveraging AI to Enhance Academic Quality and Innovation.

The world of education currently stands at a thrilling crossroads. The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) like ChatGPT has sparked intense debate in staff rooms and on campuses. Some view it as a threat that will stifle students' critical thinking, while others see it as the greatest revolution since the printing press. The question is: Will AI be a friend that empowers, or a foe that undermines?

In reality, AI is no longer a technology of the future; it is today’s reality. Ignoring it is not only impossible but also detrimental. The key lies in integrating it not as a replacement for human intelligence, but as a cognitive assistant that expands the boundaries of learning.


AI as a Friend: Limitless Personalization of Learning

One of the greatest challenges for teachers has always been giving equal attention to 30 students with varying learning speeds. This is where AI becomes a true ally. Through Adaptive Learning, AI can instantly adjust lesson materials based on each student's level of understanding. Slower learners get extra repetition, while faster learners are given higher challenges.

AI also acts as a 24/7 personal tutor that helps students understand complex concepts through simpler language. For teachers, AI is an administrative assistant that helps draft Lesson Plans or grade objective exams, allowing teachers more time to focus on aspects machines cannot replicate: emotional support and character building.

AI as a Foe: Plagiarism Risks and the Decay of Reason

On the other hand, AI can become an adversary if used as a shortcut to bypass thinking. If students use AI merely to complete assignments without understanding them, the learning process has failed. Another risk is over-dependence, which can erode basic problem-solving skills and the originality of ideas.

Furthermore, algorithmic bias and data privacy issues are serious concerns. Without proper guidance, AI can present inaccurate information (hallucinations) that, if taken at face value, will mislead a student's reasoning.


Balancing Technology and Humanism

The task of the modern educator is not to ban AI, but to teach AI Ethics. Teachers must change how assignments are given; no longer demanding answers that a machine can generate, but requiring deep analysis, personal reflection, and real-world collaboration. AI may help gather data, but humans must draw the moral and creative conclusions.

In the era of AI, the teacher's role will not disappear but transform into that of a facilitator and mentor. The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) is proactively preparing for this transformation.

Students are taught to design AI-based instructional media, understand digital ethics, and prioritize human values in teaching.
