UNPRI Enhances Collaboration of Family Doctors for Breast Cancer Detection

One Day Seminar: The Role of Family Doctors in Breast Cancer Treatment

Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) participated in the hybrid One-Day Seminar “The Role of Family Doctors in Breast Cancer Management in Indonesia” held by the Indonesian Family Doctors Association (PDKI) in collaboration with the Indonesian Oncology Surgeons Association (PERABOI) and the Indonesian Breast Cancer Foundation (YKPI).

The seminar was opened online by the Indonesian Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, followed by remarks by the Chairperson of YKPI Linda Agum Gumelar and a presentation by Dr. Walta Gautama, Sp.B (K) Onk. The seminar was started by Dr. M Arvid Suhada Sp.KKLP with the topic of Ethics and Patient Safety.

The offline activity at the Ballroom of the Century Park Atlet Hotel, Senayan, Jakarta and online throughout Indonesia was attended by almost 900 participants consisting of Primary Care Family Medicine Specialists (Sp.KKLP), PPDS KKLP, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, General Practitioners and also Young Doctors including the University of North Sumatra, Prima Indonesia University, Methodist University of Indonesia, Muhammadyah University of North Sumatra, University of Indonesia, YARSI University, Atmajaya University, Taruma Negara University, Pelita Harapan University, and various other universities.

PDKI Chairperson Isti Ilmiati Fujiati, accompanied by the Deputy Secretary of PP-PDKI for Cooperation Ali Napiah Nasution explained that Primary Care Family Medicine Specialists (Sp.KKLP) or better known as Family Doctors are doctors who specialize in the field of family medicine, which is a new specialist profession in Indonesia.

This seminar aims to improve interprofessional collaboration in breast cancer prevention and control, especially in primary care. Currently, almost 80% of breast cancer cases are found in advanced stages, namely stages 3 and 4, only a small portion is found in stages 1 and 2.

It is hoped that the collaboration of PDKI, PERABOI, and YKPI and various other professions will "reverse" the discovery of breast cancer cases into early detection of stages 1 and 2. Breast Self-Examination (SADARI) and Clinical Breast Examination (SADANIS) are simple early detection methods that can be done by every woman and Family Doctor.

She hopes that this seminar is the beginning of the PDKI Collaboration with PERABOI and YKPI to be useful and provide the best service for breast cancer sufferers, survivors and families in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Dr. dr. Ali Napiah Nasution, MKM, MKT, Sp.KKLP who is also the Vice Rector IV of UNPRI Medan added that currently there are 6 KKLP Study Programs that have received operational permits in Indonesia, namely the KKLP Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine UI, UGM, UNPAD, UNSYIAH, YARSI, and UNPRI Medan. "This seminar also aims to socialize and brand the Primary Care Family Medicine Specialist Education Program (PPDS KKLP) to Doctors and Young Doctors as one of the specialist career choices in primary care," he said.

The material from PDKI was delivered by dr. Novi Arifiani, Sp.KKLP, MKK, AAK explained that the role of Sp.KKLP in handling breast cancer in primary care is closely related to the basic characteristics of family medicine services, including comprehensive, patient-centered care that views patients not only from the clinical biomedical aspect of their complaints, but also psychological and social aspects (bio-psycho-social) that can affect their complaints and illnesses.

In handling breast cancer patients, we often focus too much on their illness and ignore psychological and social problems that are the impact of their illness, which will actually affect the patient's treatment process.
