Breaking Language Barriers: 15 UNPRI Students Fly to 3 Major Cities in Java to Teach Indonesian to Foreign Speakers
A total of 15 students from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI), were officially sent to participate in academic internships as prospective Indonesian Language teachers for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) in three major cities on the island of Java, Saturday, July 19, 2025, as an activity of the Impact Campus Competition Program Grant.
In this program, students are divided into three groups of five. They will undertake four-month internships at three partner institutions: Menara Bahasa in Semarang, Sebelas Maret University (UNS) in Surakarta (Solo), and Ahmad Dahlan University (UAD) in Yogyakarta.
During their internship, the students are not only tasked with teaching Indonesian to foreign speakers, but also participating in BIPA teaching method training, conducting classroom observations, and participating in Indonesian cultural promotion activities. Direct interaction with students from various nationalities is expected to create a two-way learning environment that enriches cross-cultural experiences.
The Dean of FKIP UNPRI, Dr. Dian Syahfitri, S.S., M.Hum, stated that this program is a golden opportunity for students to hone their communication skills, broaden their global horizons, and build inter-institutional academic networks.
He also emphasized that the students not only bring knowledge, but also carry a cultural mission to introduce the richness of Indonesian traditions, especially North Sumatra.
"Students bring not only knowledge but also a cultural mission. They represent UNPRI and the Indonesian nation before the world," he said.
To conclude the activity, the interns will present their findings and compile an academic report as part of the final evaluation. With a spirit of learning and service, they are expected to return to Medan with valuable experience that will strengthen their personal and professional competencies for the future.
