Mayor of Medan, Rico Waas, Appreciates the Grandeur of UNPRI: A National-Level Campus at Its 24th Anniversary Celebration
Mayor of Medan Praises UNPRI’s Transformation Toward a Modern, National-Class University
UNPRI, Medan – The Mayor of Medan, Rico Waas, expressed his high appreciation for the grandeur and modern facilities of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) during the 24th Anniversary Celebration held on Saturday (October 18, 2025) at the Main Hall, 10th Floor of UNPRI Campus, Jalan Sampul, Medan Petisah. Accompanied by his beloved wife, Airin, the Mayor said he was impressed by UNPRI’s development, which has now become one of the leading universities in Medan with quality on par with national-level campuses.
In his remarks, Rico Waas, whose full name is Tri Putra Bayu Waas, stated that UNPRI has shown remarkable progress. He considered the 24-year journey as proof of UNPRI’s strong commitment, which began as the Prima Husada Academy of Nursing and Midwifery in 2002, later evolved into the Prima College of Health Sciences in 2023, and finally transformed into a major university in 2025—contributing greatly to the advancement of higher education, especially in the city of Medan.
“Twenty-four years is not a short time. I believe UNPRI’s journey has been full of challenges, but thanks to the enthusiasm and collaboration of the entire academic community, UNPRI has now grown into a grand, modern campus that makes the City of Medan proud. Complete facilities must be matched by the quality of graduates and lecturers; do not fall behind universities with fewer facilities but better education quality. The essence of education lies in shaping knowledgeable and virtuous individuals, while facilities merely serve as support,” said Rico in his speech.
During the anniversary celebration, Mayor Rico also expressed his appreciation for the series of events at UNPRI Fiesta 2025, including the selection of Mr. & Ms. UNPRI—an annual event to find campus ambassadors who are knowledgeable, have strong character, and show outstanding achievements. He praised UNPRI’s creativity in organizing an event that showcases the synergy between the academic world and students’ talents. On this occasion, Rico also recited a pantun (traditional Malay rhyme), describing UNPRI not only as a place to gain knowledge but also as a space for creativity and achievement to flourish.
“To the ambassadors who have been chosen, be extraordinary education ambassadors of UNPRI. Do not be complacent or easily satisfied—keep creating and become role models for other students. Uphold UNPRI’s good name and prove your real contribution to the people of Medan and the nation of Indonesia,” said Rico, who also showed his support for his beloved wife, who was appointed as one of the judges. The Mayor’s speech, which began with a Malay pantun, was also concluded with one—expressing his hope that UNPRI will continue to thrive and succeed.
UNPRI’s 24th Anniversary celebration took place in a lively and well-organized manner. Present at the event were UNPRI Rector Prof. Chrismis Novalinda Ginting, M.Kes., AIFO-K.; Chairman of the UNPRI Executive Board Prof. Dr. Tommy Leonard, S.H., M.Kn.; vice rectors, deans, bureau heads, strategic partners such as Royal Prima General Hospital, Global Prima, Prim TV, as well as representatives from high school principals across Medan and event sponsors. The enthusiasm of students and guests who filled the main hall made this year’s UNPRI anniversary celebration even more memorable.
