UNPRI Innovation in Electro-Medical Education, Addressing the Challenges of Modern Healthcare
UNPRI, Medan - In the era of rapidly advancing healthcare technology, Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) continues to strengthen its position as a leading campus with a socio-technopreneurship IT-based vision. Through the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Electrical Engineering, which uses the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum and is under the Faculty of Science and Technology, abbreviated as FAST, the university now presents the concept of Electromedicine, an integration of electronics technology and the medical field, as directed by UNPRI Rector Prof. Dr. Chrismis Novalinda Ginting, M.Kes., AIFO-K. This concept serves as the main selling point and a key differentiator compared to similar programs at other universities in Sumatra.
Electromedicine itself is a field of engineering that focuses on developing, operating, and maintaining modern healthcare equipment. UNPRI Electrical Engineering students are equipped with the ability to understand and design various medical devices, ranging from diagnostic tools like EKG and MRI, to supporting equipment like centrifuges, pH meters, and blood solution warmers. With the support of its own healthcare facilities, UNPRI has transformed into a campus that offers a complete ecosystem integrating technology and medicine.
The Head of the Electrical Engineering Study Program, Winner Parluhutan Nainggolan, S.T., M.Kom., explained that this advantage is the result of synergy between faculties within UNPRI. “We are the only campus in Sumatra with direct integration between the fields of engineering and medicine. Our students learn directly in healthcare facilities owned by UNPRI, such as RSU Royal Prima Medan, RS Royal Prima Marelan, RS UNPRI Tebing Tinggi, RS Mata Prima Vision, RS Gigi dan Mulut Prima, and the newly inaugurated Royal Cemara Clinic,” he said. This collaboration also strengthens the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in research and community service in the field of medical technology.
The presence of UNPRI’s network of hospitals and clinics in North Sumatra, along with those in Jambi Province, namely RSU Royal Prima Jambi, and soon to be opened in Pekanbaru, Riau Province, makes UNPRI the Private University with the most healthcare facilities in Indonesia. This opens great opportunities for Electrical Engineering students to conduct applied research and internships in the field of electromedicine. The synergy between the Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST), the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences (FKKGIK), as well as the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery (FKK), drives the creation of healthcare innovations by students and faculty. This integration shapes graduates who are not only technically skilled but also adaptive and solution-oriented in the face of modern healthcare challenges.
The Bachelor’s Degree Program in Electrical Engineering at UNPRI is currently accredited as "Very Good." It covers the study of electrical power, electronics, and electromagnetism to design, develop, and produce electrical and electronic devices and systems as the main field. Supporting fields include control systems, instrumentation, renewable energy, and robotics. Courses such as Electrical Circuits, Electromagnetic Fields, Microprocessors, Control Systems, and Energy Conversion enhance students' competencies to meet the demands of the global industry, which requires mastery of advanced technologies and practical skills in electrical and electromedicine fields.
