UNPRI—A Favorite, Excellent, Socio-Technopreneurship Campus—Becomes a Center for Electromedical Research and Education in Sumatra through the Bachelor’s Program in Electrical Engineering

UNPRI, Medan — In an era of rapid advances in health technology, Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) continues to strengthen its position as an excellent, IT-based, socio-technopreneurship-oriented campus. Through the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Study Program—using an Outcome Based Education (OBE) curriculum and housed under the Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST)—UNPRI now presents the Electromedical concept, namely the integration of electronics technology and the medical field, as directed by UNPRI Rector Prof. Dr. Chrismis Novalinda Ginting, M.Kes., AIFO-K. This concept serves as a selling point and a key differentiator from similar programs at other universities across Sumatra.
Electromedical is an engineering field that combines the principles of electronics with medicine to develop, operate, and maintain electronic health equipment used in diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring. It also includes the management, training, and research of medical devices to ensure the quality and safety of health services. Students are expected to master the operation of medical devices and contribute to improving the quality of care.
UNPRI Electrical Engineering students are equipped to understand and design various medical devices—from diagnostic tools such as ECG and MRI to supporting equipment like centrifuges, pH meters, and blood-solution warmers. With its own healthcare facilities, UNPRI has built a complete ecosystem linking technology and medicine.
The Head of the Electrical Engineering Study Program, Winner Parluhutan Nainggolan, S.T., M.Kom., explained that this advantage stems from synergy among UNPRI’s faculties. “We are the only campus in Sumatra with direct integration between engineering and medicine. Our students learn directly in UNPRI-owned health facilities such as RSU Royal Prima Medan, RS Royal Prima Marelan, RS UNPRI Tebing Tinggi, Prima Vision Eye Hospital, the Prima Dental and Oral Hospital, and the newly inaugurated Royal Cemara Clinic,” he said. This collaboration also strengthens the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education—particularly in research and community service in medical technology.
UNPRI’s network of hospitals and clinics in North Sumatra—augmented by RSU Royal Prima Jambi in Jambi Province and a soon-to-open facility in Pekanbaru, Riau—positions UNPRI as a private university with one of the most extensive healthcare facilities in Indonesia, opening major opportunities for Electrical Engineering students to conduct applied research and internships in the electromedical field. Synergy among the Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST), the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (FKKGIK), and the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery (FKK) drives innovation in student- and lecturer-made medical devices. This integration shapes graduates who are not only technically proficient but also adaptive and solution-oriented to the challenges of modern healthcare.
The Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Study Program at UNPRI currently holds a “Baik Sekali” (Very Good) accreditation. The core fields include electric power, electronics, and electromagnetism for designing, developing, and producing electrical and electronic devices and systems, with supporting areas in control systems, instrumentation, renewable energy, and robotics. Courses such as Electric Circuits, Electromagnetic Fields, Microprocessors, Control Systems, and Energy Conversion build student competence to meet global industry needs that demand mastery of emerging technologies and practical skills in electrical and electromedical domains.
