UNPRI Bachelor of Medicine International Public Lecture Presents Cambodia’s Periodontology Expert Dr. Sok Chea, Discussing Modern Dental Implants and Global Trends in Dentistry
Enhancing Student Competence through Exposure to Global Periodontology Practices and Innovations in Dental Implant Technology by an International Expert
UNPRI, Medan – The Bachelor of Dentistry Education Study Program at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) once again presented an international-scale academic activity through a public lecture featuring a periodontology and implantology expert from Cambodia, Dr. Sok Chea, D.D.S., F.A.D.I., F.C.S.P., F.I.C.C.D.E, M.I.C.O.I..
The activity, held on Saturday (15/11/2025) in the Mini Hall on the 10th Floor of the UNPRI Main Campus, Jalan Sampul No. 3 Medan Petisah, serves as proof of UNPRI's consistency as the best and leading national campus that continues to expand its international academic network. The event was moderated by drg. Mellisa Sim, M.Kes.
In his speech, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FKKG), Prof. Dr. dr. H. Gusbakti Rusip., M.Sc., Sp.KKLP(K)., PKK., AIFM., AIFO-K., emphasized the importance of the opportunity to learn directly from international experts. He reminded students to utilize this scientific meeting by actively asking questions and broadening their perspectives. “He traveled all the way from Phnom Penh, and is very well-known as a specialist periodontist. Do not miss any details of the knowledge shared. This is a very valuable opportunity to expand your perspective,” he said.
Dr. Sok Chea himself is a prominent figure in the dental world in Cambodia. Growing up in a family of dentists for three generations, he completed his dental education at the University of Health Sciences and continued his studies in periodontology and dental implantology. He is also the owner of Sokchea Dental Clinic, one of the modern clinics in Phnom Penh that emphasizes digital dentistry technology. Besides teaching as an Associate Professor, Dr. Sok Chea is actively involved as a member of international organizations such as the Cambodian Society of Periodontology and the Organization of International Support for Dental Education (OISDE). In his public lecture, he began by explaining the role of periodontology in maintaining gum health, jawbone, tooth supporting tissues, and preventive measures for periodontal disease, which is now a global issue.
The main material then focused on modern implantology, a tooth replacement technology that is now an international standard in dental practice. Dr. Sok Chea explained in detail the stages of implant placement, ranging from extracting damaged teeth, jawbone grafting procedures, titanium implant placement, to the recovery process which takes 6–12 weeks. He also explained the three main components of an implant: the implant root, the abutment, and the artificial crown, as well as the importance of precision in every procedure. He also compared current implant technology with previous methods, including differences in effectiveness, materials used, and clinical success rates.
Dr. Sok Chea also explained the indications, contraindications, and potential complications in dental implant procedures. Patients must meet requirements such as having healthy gums, adequate jawbone, no diseases that inhibit healing, not being a heavy smoker, and not undergoing radiotherapy on the neck or head. He also described possible risks, such as infection, sinus disorders, implant rejection, nerve damage, swelling, and the possibility of the crown coming loose if not treated thoroughly. This explanation is important so that students understand that implantology requires not only technical skills but also mature clinical judgment.
The international public lecture was also attended by the Head of the Bachelor of Dentistry Study Program drg. Cindy Denhara Wijaya, M.Biomed., Head of the Professional Doctor Study Program drg. Shieny Lokanata, M.Biomed., Head of the Master of Dentistry Study Program Dr. drg. Florenly, MHSM., MPH., C.Ort., FICCDE., and Vice Dean IV of FKKGK drg. Susanto, M.Kes. Student enthusiasm was evident from the questions asked, ranging from challenges in implantology for patients with severe periodontitis, next-generation implant technology, to the influence of lifestyle on long-term implant success. The discussion was highly interactive and strengthened the clinical understanding of students who will be entering the world of practice.
Concluding the activity, the committee presented appreciation and souvenirs to Dr. Sok Chea as a form of gratitude for the knowledge shared.
