500 Students of the Faculty of Agro Technology UNPRI Attend Public Lecture "Potential Utilization of Marginal Land for Oil Palm Plants"
Public Lecture Presents Palm Oil Experts: Students Encouraged to Understand Sustainable Management of Marginal Land
A total of 500 students of the Faculty of Agro Technology, Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) attended the public lecture "Potential for Utilization of Marginal Land for Oil Palm Plants" which was held on Friday (9/5/2025) at the Mini Hall, 10th Floor, UNPRI Campus, Jln.Sampul No. 3 Medan.
Appearing as resource persons were Prof. Dr. Ir. Dedik Budianta, M.S (Professor of the Faculty of Agriculture, Unsri) and moderator Andry Admaja Tarigan SP., M.Agr (Lecturer at the Faculty of Agro Technology, UNPRI). According to Prof. Dr. Ir. Dedik Budianta, M.S, marginal land in Indonesia is dominated by dry land covering 144.47 million ha (75.6% of the total land area), spread across Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku. Most of it is in the lowlands (77.06%) with high acidity levels (107.36 million ha of acid, 37.12 million ha of alkaline). Meanwhile, wetlands such as swamps and tidal swamps reach 32.6 million hectares.
“On dry land, the dominant soil is Ultisol covering 45.8 million hectares (around 24–25% of the total land area), followed by Oxisol (14.1 million hectares), Spodosol (2.16 million hectares), and Aridisol which are spread in limited areas in certain locations. Meanwhile, wetlands are dominated by Inceptisol (20 million hectares), Entisol (7 million hectares), and peat soil (13.4 million hectares). These soils generally have physical and chemical properties that do not support optimal productivity, so they are classified as marginal land,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Dedik Budianta, M.S.
Dean of the Faculty of Agro Technology UNPRI, Dr. Suratni Afrianti, S.T., M.Si said that the public lecture was part of an effort to broaden horizons and deepen students' understanding of strategic issues in the world of agriculture, especially related to palm oil development.
"As we know, palm oil is a superior commodity that makes a major contribution to the national economy. However, the challenges to its sustainability are increasingly complex, especially in the limited productive land. Hopefully this public lecture will increase the knowledge and insight of our students, especially in the field of palm oil plantations," she concluded
