IK UNPRI Hosts Research and Pharmacology Public Lecture with Prof. Firzan Nainu, Exploring Drosophila's Potential in Drug Discovery
Highlight Fruit Fly Organism Models in Accelerating Drug Discovery

Medan, August 2026 — The Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) successfully hosted a public lecture titled "Research and Pharmacology" on Thursday (August 6, 2026) at the 10th Floor Grand Meeting Room of the UNPRI Main Campus, Jl. Sampul No. 3, Medan. The event featured distinguished pharmacologist and Head of the Pharmacy Department at Hasanuddin University, Prof. Firzan Nainu, S.Si., M.Biomed.Sc., Ph.D., Apt., as the keynote speaker to discuss the utilization of fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) as model organisms in biomedical research and drug discovery.
Attended by Clinical Pharmacy undergraduate students and Pharmacist Professional Education (PSPPA) students, the event commenced with opening remarks from UNPRI Vice Rector III, followed by a traditional Ulos sash presentation as a token of high respect in North Sumatra culture.

During her engaging presentation, Prof. Firzan Nainu explained that approximately 75 percent of human disease-related genes share functional counterparts in fruit flies. With advantages such as a rapid life cycle, cost-effective maintenance, and flexible genetic manipulation without complex ethical hurdles, Drosophila serves as an exceptionally efficient in vivo platform for modeling human diseases—ranging from cancer, diabetes, and bacterial infections to viral infections such as COVID-19, dengue, and influenza—while accelerating drug discovery and drug repurposing.
