Tzu Ching UNPRI Hosts Vesak Joint Prayer: Fostering Virtue and Peace within the Campus Community
Reflecting on the Meaning of Vesak through Togetherness and Compassion
Medan, May 24, 2026 — In commemoration of Vesak Day, the Tzu Chi Student Association (Tzu Ching) of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI), in collaboration with Tzu Ching Medan and Tzu Chi Medan, held a "Vesak Joint Prayer" event. The ceremony, held at the UNPRI Main Hall on Jalan Sampul, aimed to reinforce values of wisdom, compassion, and peace, particularly among the younger generation.
Vesak is a sacred day for Buddhists to honor three great events in the life of the Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and Parinibbana. This event served as a moment of self-reflection for students to delve deeper into these noble teachings. The event was attended by 430 students, supported by 40 Tzu Ching volunteers and 23 Tunas volunteers who collaborated to ensure the ceremony proceeded smoothly.
The event opened with remarks from UNPRI representative Mr. Abdi Dharma, followed by speeches from Tzu Chi representative Aini Lidjaya and the event coordinator, Jennifer. Participants then attended a Dhammadesana delivered by Bhante Siripanno and Bhante Kusalacitto, where they were encouraged to understand and apply the Buddha's teachings in their daily lives. The Vesak procession followed, featuring the chanting of Gatha, and the ritual bathing of the Buddha statue, symbolizing self-purification and the cultivation of virtue.
The event concluded with a video of Master Cheng Yen’s lecture on the meaning of Vesak, and a retrospective video of Tzu Ching's social activities. Jennifer, the coordinator, emphasized that the goal was to instill a spirit of compassion, gratitude, and care for others. "I hope the younger generation can grow into wise individuals who make positive contributions to society," she stated. Participants Kerin and Angelline shared that the event helped them find inner peace and understand the importance of mindfulness amidst their busy academic lives.
In alignment with Master Cheng Yen's teachings, "Those who understand compassion and gratitude will have the best relationships with others," this event served as a reminder that true happiness comes from appreciating others and being grateful. Through this celebration, UNPRI students are encouraged to continue striving to become better individuals and positive influences in their surroundings.
