Drone Agriculture Training and Remote Pilot Certification: UNPRI Faculty of Agro-Technology Students Strengthen Competence and Prepare for the Era of Smart Farming
This drone agriculture training and remote pilot certification program is designed to enhance the technical skills of UNPRI Agro-Technology students while preparing them for advances in modern agricultural technology toward the Smart Farming era.
UNPRI, Medan - The Faculty of Agro Technology at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) once again demonstrated a strong commitment to preparing the younger generation to face the challenges of Agriculture 4.0 by organizing Drone Agriculture Training and Remote Pilot Certification in collaboration with Terra Drone Indonesia, an international-scale drone technology company.
The activity, held on November 24–25, 2025, at LPP Agro, marks an important milestone in efforts to strengthen student competence through mastering digital mapping technology, geospatial analysis, and drone operations for various industrial needs, particularly the palm oil plantation sector which is a pillar of the national economy.
This training activity also included the signing of an MoU, MoA, and Implementation Agreement (IA) between UNPRI and Terra Drone Indonesia as a form of long-term strategic commitment in developing smart farming innovations. This cooperation is a concrete step by UNPRI to expand its industrial network, strengthen its digital-based curriculum, and ensure students have skills relevant to the needs of the job market. The Dean of the Faculty of Agro Technology, Dr. Suratni Afrianti, S.T., M.Si., emphasized in her speech that the era of modern agriculture no longer relies solely on manual skills but demands mastery of high technology, data literacy, and the ability to interpret mapping results to support precise decision-making.
The event was attended by various faculty officials, including Head of the Bachelor of Agrotechnology Study Program Andry Admaja Tarigan, S.P., M.Agr, Head of the Bachelor of Agribusiness Study Program Laura Juita Pinem, S.Si., M.Si, Secretary of the Bachelor of Agribusiness Study Program Muhammad Arif Nasution, S.P., M.P, lecturers such as Dr. Bayu Pratomo, S.ST., M.P, Winner Parluhutan Nainggolan, S.T., M.Kom, and Amani Darma Tarigan, S.T., M.T, as well as Semester 3 students of the UNPRI Faculty of Agro Technology. The presence of Ray Ozma, S.T., M.Sc, as Chief Technical Officer of Terra Drone Indonesia, gave greater significance to this activity. In his message, Ray affirmed that the global plantation industry is now moving towards automation and air-based data management, so students need to be equipped not only with the ability to fly drones but also to understand the complete flow of data analysis such as orthophoto, NDVI, crop density maps, and even air-based crop stress detection.
During the two-day activity, students received comprehensive training covering the operation of multirotor and fixed-wing drones, flight safety standards, field simulation, plantation area mapping techniques, Generation of Control Points (GCP), and geospatial data processing using analysis software. Not only that, participants were also introduced to the use of drones for agricultural activities such as precision fertilization, automatic spraying, monitoring crop development, and even early pest detection based on imagery. The training material was designed to meet the preparation standards for Remote Pilot certification, which is now a recognized competency certificate across various industrial sectors, including plantations, forestry, construction, and agritech.
The cooperation between UNPRI and Terra Drone Indonesia further strengthens the position of the Faculty of Agro Technology as a pioneer of modern agricultural education in North Sumatra. With two excellent study programs, Bachelor of Agrotechnology and Bachelor of Agribusiness, UNPRI continues to direct its curriculum towards digital integration through the development of smart farming laboratories, the utilization of drone analysis, and the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) in land management. Terra Drone itself is a global company engaged in drone technology and Urban Air Mobility with the mission of “changing the world from the sky,” and is experienced in aerial mapping, industrial inspection, 3D modeling, and even palm oil monitoring for large-scale plantation companies.
