UNPRI, Medan – Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) once again made history through the 9th Graduation Ceremony in 2025. In this historic moment, UNPRI conferred the title of Professor to two distinguished scientists, awarded directly by the Rector of UNPRI, Prof. Dr. Chrismis Novalinda Ginting, M.Kes. This conferment was granted for their significant contributions in innovation and the development of the stem cell laboratory. The moment was witnessed by the Vice Governor of North Sumatra, H. Surya, BSc, UNPRI Founder Prof. Dr. dr. I Nyoman Ehrich Lister, M.Kes., AIFM., Sp.KKLP., University Advisor Prof. Dr. dr. Terawan Agus Putranto, Sp.Rad(K), RI., Head of LLDikti Region I North Sumatra Prof. Drs. Saiful Anwar Matondang, M.A., Ph.D., along with dignitaries and invited guests at the UNPRI Main Hall, 10th floor, Jalan Sampul Medan Petisah, on Wednesday (01/10/2025).

The awardees were Dr. Muh Busra Fauzi, Head of the Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; and Dr. Daniel Looi Qi Hao, Chief Scientist Officer of Cytohealth, Malaysia. Both are deeply focused on medical research, particularly stem cell–based therapy. At the graduation, it was also announced to graduates of Diploma III, Applied Bachelor, Bachelor, Professional, Master, and Doctoral programs that UNPRI, besides being a health development hub in North Sumatra, has also been designated as a national research and development center for stem cells in Indonesia, stemming from established international collaborations.

This achievement is not coincidental, as UNPRI has long been a center of education and degenerative disease studies, with integrated research laboratories both on campus and within its teaching hospitals. UNPRI owns the largest number of teaching hospitals in Indonesia—six in total—including RSU Royal Prima Ayananda Medan, RSU Royal Prima Marelan, RSU Royal Prima Jambi, Prima Vision Eye Hospital, Prima Dental Hospital, and UNPRI Hospital in Tebingtinggi. Soon, UNPRI will also open teaching hospitals in Pekanbaru and Cikarang, Bekasi. The existence of these hospitals proves UNPRI’s strong commitment to medicine and health, while motivating lecturers and students to enhance a culture of research.

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences (FKKGIK) UNPRI, as one of the university’s eight faculties, now serves as a pilot project for research as part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. FKKGIK continues to improve toward international accreditation after previously achieving “Excellent” status. Through this graduation, UNPRI’s position as a center for medical and health education, recognized by LLDikti Region I North Sumatra, was reaffirmed with full support from its teaching hospitals.

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells capable of developing into various types of body cells and repairing damaged tissues. Stem cell research at educational institutions like UNPRI is crucial, not only for theoretical studies but also for clinical applications through collaborations with teaching hospitals. While stem cell therapy research is still limited at many Indonesian universities, UNPRI is striving to make it a cornerstone in addressing degenerative diseases, organ damage, and future health challenges.

In addition to stem cell research, UNPRI also provides opportunities for other research conducted by doctoral candidates in the Doctoral Program in Medical Sciences, many of whom are from RSPAD Gatot Subroto, where Prof. Dr. dr. Terawan practices and conducts studies. They focus on strategic health issues such as diabetes therapy and kidney damage, which often lead to kidney failure. These studies not only contribute academically but also bring tangible benefits to society.

RSU Royal Prima, one of UNPRI’s main hospitals, plays a dual role as both a public health service center and a medical education hub. Currently, RSU Royal Prima serves as the teaching hospital for undergraduate medical students, six medical master’s programs, and seven specialist doctor programs—the largest number in Indonesia. The hospital has received the KARS Paripurna Accreditation three times and continues to develop leading services such as the Heart and Stroke Center and the Trauma Center. These facts confirm that UNPRI’s clinical services and medical education advance in parallel with technological and health science progress. (Yd).
