Leading Campus in Medan Hosts The 3rd International Summer Course 2025

The 3rd International Summer Course 2025 themed “Journey Among North Sumatran Mangrove” is hosted by UNPRI & USU, featuring international collaboration, seminars, and mangrove ecosystem exploration in North Sumatra.

UNPRI, Medan - Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) together with Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) once again hosted The 3rd International Summer Course 2025 with the theme “Journey Among North Sumatran Mangrove”. This event took place on August 31–September 7, 2025 in Medan City and the coastal area of Beras Basah, Pangkalan Susu District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra. For three consecutive years, UNPRI and USU have consistently become the center of this international academic program.

The event was organized through the collaboration of PUI Mangrove USU and LPPM UNPRI led by Edy Fachrial, S.Sii., M.Si., with the support of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Chulalongkorn University Thailand, Diliman College Philippines, Deltares Netherlands, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Philippine Rice Research Institution, and the Green Technology Enthusiasts Association of Malaysia. This year, 56 participants from various countries joined, including 17 international students from Pakistan and Japan.

In addition to seminars and public lectures at UNPRI’s 16th floor main campus, participants also took part in field activities. The agenda began with the opening at the USU Rectorate, a visit to Lake Toba, and an educational study at USU’s Faculty of Forestry which has an artificial forest and greenhouse. This activity introduced the natural richness of North Sumatra to international participants.

Participants were also scheduled to explore tourist attractions in Medan City, such as the Malay heritage icon Maimun Palace, and shop for souvenirs. The highlight of the event took place on the Beras Basah coast, Langkat, featuring mangrove planting, tasting pandan coconut, and trying stingless bee honey. According to Sabrina from PUI Mangrove USU, this program provides firsthand experience of how local communities preserve the mangrove ecosystem. “We want participants to understand both theory and practice of conservation in the field,” she said.

In the seminar session, UNPRI Vice Rector III, Refi Ikhtiar, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., one of the 18 speakers, highlighted that this international summer course implemented by UNPRI students in collaboration with USU reflects sustainable and international-scale cooperation. This aligns with UNPRI’s preparation to become an internationally accredited university, while the mangrove-themed course fosters applied research relevant to global needs. Mangroves, rich in benefits, hold potential for environmental research and medical tourism that supports UNPRI’s socio-techmopreneurship concept,” he explained.

Currently, the largest mangrove forest in Indonesia is located in Papua, covering about 1.63 million hectares. Papua has the widest mangrove ecosystem in Indonesia and even the largest in Southeast Asia, such as in Bintuni Bay. Mangroves are threatened by human activities such as land clearing for aquaculture, agriculture, infrastructure development, and illegal logging. Other threats include herbicide pollution, oil spills, plastic waste, and climate change impacts such as rising sea levels, which pose serious threats to the survival of mangrove ecosystems.

Here are the 16 speakers of The 3rd International Summer Course 2025: Dr. Itchika Sivaipram (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand), Dr. Debra J Stokes (Southern Cross University, Australia), Prof. Ravindra C Joshi (Philippine Rice Research Institution), Assoc Prof. TS.
