Strengthening National Biological Safety: UNPRI Holds Public Lecture with Head of Indonesian Quarantine Agency
Campus And Government Synergy Protects National Agricultural Plantation Commodities
Medan, October 28, 2026 — Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) successfully hosted a General Lecture themed "Strengthening Quarantine and Biosecurity Systems in Supporting Agricultural and Plantation Commodity Exports and Imports" at the Main Hall of the UNPRI Main Campus on Wednesday (Oct 28, 2026). This grand event was attended by approximately 1,000 students, faculty deans, bureau and institution heads, industry partners, and invited guests from various government and industrial agencies.
The academic forum featured keynote speaker H. Abdul Kadir Karding, S.Pi., M.Sc., Head of the National Quarantine Agency (BKN) and Former Minister of Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection. Also in attendance were Riswan, S.STP., M.Si., Inspector of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency; Andi PM Yusmanto AM, Head of the North Sumatra Large Agricultural Quarantine Center; and Agustinus Budi Hartono, Head of the Region II Class I Kualanamu Airport Authority Office in Medan. Representing UNPRI were Vice Rector II Prof. Dr. Ermi Girsang, M.Kes., M.Biomed., AIFO., Vice Rector III Dr. Refi Ikhtiari, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., and Vice Rector IV Dr. dr. Ali Napiah Nasution, M.K.T., M.K.M., Sp.KKLP(K)., Subsp.COPC., alongside university deans and bureau heads.
UNPRI Vice Rector III, representing the Rector, delivered welcoming remarks. "Thank you for your visit to Universitas Prima Indonesia. We believe that synergy among academia, government, and industry is key to the advancement of science, research, and technology. UNPRI stands as an Impactful University — and the presence of national stakeholders today is tangible proof of the synergy we continuously build," he stated.
Moderated by Dr. Ir. Deni Faisal Mirza, M.M., Head of the UNPRI Export-Import Division, the general lecture explored the critical importance of robust biosecurity systems. During the session, the keynote speaker emphasized that Indonesia's rich biodiversity — spanning agriculture, plantations, wildlife, and fisheries — serves as a strategic asset requiring strong biosecurity and biological protection as the foundation for sustainable international trade. "Indonesia's natural wealth and biodiversity are extraordinary strategic assets that we must jointly protect through robust quarantine and biosecurity systems. Without strong protection, our leading commodities will fail to penetrate and compete sustainably in the global market," H. Abdul Kadir Karding asserted. He further added, "We deeply appreciate the active role of universities like UNPRI, and through its Export-Import Division, this campus is expected to serve as a driving force in strengthening the supply chain and competitiveness of national commodities."
This general lecture further solidifies UNPRI's stance as an institution that transcends traditional classroom learning, actively bridging students with national strategic issues that directly impact the future of Indonesian industry and food security.
