"Beyond Translation" Workshop: Mandarin Program at FBK UNPRI Equips Students with Strategic Communication Skills

More than Just Language Translation, Effective Communication is the Key to Building Reputation and Trust

Medan, June 15, 2026 — The Applied Undergraduate Program in Mandarin for Business and Professional Communication at the Faculty of Language and Communication (FBK) Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) successfully hosted a workshop titled “Beyond Translation: How Language, Communication, and Public Speaking Shape Reputation” on Friday (June 12, 2026) at the UNPRI Main Campus.

The event featured Wendelyn Leo, S.M., M.A., a corporate practitioner and former Metro TV journalist, as the keynote speaker. Wendelyn emphasized that in the professional world, choosing the right words is crucial for maintaining reputation and avoiding misunderstandings. She noted that positive audience perception, which builds trust and branding, stems from communication that is precise and culturally adaptive.

The workshop was highly interactive, featuring case study sessions that challenged students to present solutions to professional communication dilemmas. "At the end, communication is about understanding people," Wendelyn noted. The Program Secretary, Mei Lisa, B.Ed., MTCSOL, reinforced this by stating that language is merely a tool, while communication is the impact. "A person might be fluent in Mandarin, but without effective communication skills, the intended message may be lost or misinterpreted," she stated.

Mei Lisa further highlighted that Mandarin graduates play a strategic role as cultural bridges between Indonesia and China. They are expected not only to translate but also to explain underlying values and perspectives to facilitate effective cross-cultural cooperation. As an excellently accredited university, UNPRI is committed to facilitating student talent, ensuring they become competent and high-quality communicators.
