Waisak Prayer at UNPRI: A Moment of Reflection and Unity in Diversity
Momentum of Spirituality and Love in the UNPRI Academic Environment
Tzu Ching UNPRI - UNIVERSITAS PRIMA INDONESIA Medan, May 18, 2025 – In the spirit of strengthening the values of spirituality, harmony, and concern for each other, the Tzu Chi Student Youth Association of Universitas Prima Indonesia (Tzu Ching UNPRI) held a Joint Prayer for Waisak 2025, which was carried out solemnly and meaningfully on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the 10th Floor Hall, Universitas Prima Indonesia Campus.
The event, which carried the theme "Remembering Three Noble Characters, Purifying the Mind and Spreading the Dharma", succeeded in attracting wide attention and participation from various elements of the academic community. Present at this event were monks and novices, the Rectorate, the Deans of faculties, lecturers, students, and members of Tzu Ching UNPRI, with a total of more than 500 participants. Their presence reflects the enthusiasm and concern of the younger generation towards the noble values taught by Buddha and the importance of spiritual practice in the midst of dynamic campus life.

In addition, this activity is an important momentum to purify the mind, cultivate virtue, and strengthen Dharma practices in daily life. Through a solemn procession, participants are invited to recall the noble teachings, cultivate compassion, and instill a spirit of sharing with others, regardless of ethnicity, religion, race, or culture.
The event began at 10:00 WIB with an opening and warm welcome from representatives of the Rectorate of Universitas Prima Indonesia and representatives from the Tzu Chi Indonesia Foundation. In their remarks, both parties appreciated the initiative of Tzu Ching UNPRI which consistently presents positive activities, both in the spiritual and social fields.
Then, the participants were treated to a Dhammadesana or Dhamma lecture delivered by Bhante Hitesaka Thera, who provided enlightenment on the meaning of Waisak in modern life, as well as the importance of practicing compassion, wisdom, and self-awareness in facing the challenges of the times.
The main event of Waisak officially began at 10:55 WIB. The next series of activities included screening a video on the beauty of Buddhist teachings and the procedures for the Waisak procession, singing the Incense Gatha and the Praise Gatha for Buddha, as well as the sacred procession of Bathing the Buddha Image which began at exactly 11:20 WIB. This procession is a symbol of inner cleansing and the intention to start a new life that is more sacred, full of love, and compassion. After the procession, a video lecture by Master Cheng Yen, the founder of the Tzu Chi Foundation, was also played, explaining the deepest meaning of Waisak and the importance of bringing the spirit of Buddhist teachings into real action.
Before the event closed, all participants were invited to pray sincerely, perform the bestowal of merit, and watch a video of Tzu Ching UNPRI's flashback activities, which showed their various contributions and real actions in social, humanitarian, and environmental activities. This activity was officially closed at 12.20 WIB with a warm and emotional atmosphere.
Cultivating a Sense of Caring and Harmony in the Campus Environment Through this activity, Tzu Ching UNPRI succeeded in building a space for reflection and deep spiritual learning for students. Moreover, this event also became a forum to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, strengthen the spirit of mutual cooperation, and increase empathy among the younger generation.
Tzu Ching UNPRI stated its commitment to continue presenting various positive activities in the future. Not only limited to spiritual activities such as Waisak, but also in the form of social, educational, and environmental activities that contribute to creating a harmonious, peaceful, and cultured campus. Through the spirit of boundless love, it is hoped that all participants can take home an important message from this activity: that kindness, caring, and wisdom are the main foundations in building a meaningful life.
