Industrial Engineering Students Favorite Campus FAST-UNPRI Internship at PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) Regional I Belawan, Study Human Resources and Port Management
FAST-UNPRI Industrial Engineering students underwent an internship at PT Pelindo Regional I Belawan to deepen human resource management, operations and efficiency of the port logistics system.
UNPRI, Medan – Five students from the Industrial Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST), Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI), participated in an industrial internship at PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) Regional I Belawan, focusing on Human Resources (HR) and port management. The program, running from March 19 to August 19, 2025, is part of the collaboration between UNPRI and Pelindo to enhance student competencies through experiential learning in a strategic national industry.
This internship aims to deepen students’ understanding of port management, logistics supply chain systems, and operational efficiency in goods distribution and storage. The collaboration aligns with UNPRI’s commitment to developing an adaptive, industry-oriented curriculum that prepares graduates for careers in logistics, manufacturing, and maritime transportation. During the internship, UNPRI students were placed in several key departments such as warehouse management, goods distribution, and human resources. They actively participated in analyzing ship loading and unloading processes, vessel waiting times, and cargo flow within the port area. Students also gained firsthand experience with port logistics systems and the implementation of Supply Chain Management (SCM) in the maritime sector, training them to think analytically, critically, and innovatively in optimizing port operations.
Basri Alam, Senior HR Manager of PT Pelindo Regional I Belawan, expressed his appreciation for the collaboration. “We appreciate UNPRI’s active engagement with the industrial sector. Partnerships between universities and state-owned enterprises like this are crucial to developing top-quality human resources ready to face digital transformation in the logistics and port sectors,” he said. PT Pelindo, a state-owned enterprise managing ports across Indonesia, was formed through the 2021 merger of Pelindo I, II, III, and IV, and now operates under PT Pelindo II (Persero) as the holding company, with subholdings such as PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas and PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim.
According to Dr. Anita Christine Sembiring, S.T., M.T., Head of the Industrial Engineering Study Program at UNPRI, the internship program at Pelindo represents a tangible implementation of the MoU between UNPRI and strategic national industry partners. “With a ‘Very Good’ accreditation, UNPRI’s Industrial Engineering Program is committed to producing graduates who excel academically and possess real-world industrial experience. This program allows students to apply the knowledge they have gained since their early semesters,” she explained.
The Industrial Engineering Bachelor’s Program at UNPRI is one of seven flagship programs under FAST, alongside Electrical Engineering, Informatics Engineering, Information Systems, Visual Communication Design, Architecture, and Civil Engineering, led by Prof. Ir. Bhakti Alamsyah, M.T., Ph.D. as Dean.
