Pharmacist Profession Student Undertakes PKPA at Royal Prima Hospital Medan: “This Is Not Just an Internship, but a Calling”

PKPA Is Not Merely a Requirement, but a Step Toward Dedication in Healthcare Service

Medan, November 7, 2025 — The Pharmacist Professional Work Practice (PKPA) is a crucial stage in building the competence and integrity of prospective Pharmacists. This was the experience of Fitriah Parmadami Hasibuan, a Pharmacist Professional student at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI), who is currently undergoing PKPA at Royal Prima Hospital Medan (RSU Royal Prima Medan). For Fitriah, this experience is not merely an academic requirement but a calling to be directly involved in healthcare services.

In an interview with Shania Mirza, Fitriah recalled her first day as the initial step into a new work environment. “We were directed to receive the rules and regulations, then immediately taken to the pharmacy room. The team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and even administrative staff were very friendly and helpful in explaining the workflow, from receiving prescriptions to providing drug information services,” she explained.

Fitriah revealed that the main challenges she faced included adjusting to the hospital pharmacy environment, re-familiarizing herself with technical SOPs, and the fast-paced work rhythm that demands high precision.

“On the first day alone, there was an emergency prescription. The pressure was high because there couldn't be any mistakes,” she added.

One memorable experience was dealing with a patient who wanted immediate service when the dispensing area was busy. “I gave an explanation and asked them to be patient. Good communication is very important in such situations,” she said.

In managing shifts, compiling reports, and engaging in independent study, Fitriah emphasized the importance of effective time management. “Time is money. When the shift is less busy, I work on reports little by little. After returning home, there is still time to study, even when tired,” she stated.

There are three things that made her more confident in pursuing this profession:

  • The scientific challenge of understanding drug interactions
  • Direct interaction with patients
  • A collaborative work environment among health personnel

She hopes that pharmacists will increasingly be recognized as an important part of the public health system. “Hopefully, pharmacists will not only be seen as providers of medication but also as a community partner in maintaining health,” she hoped.

In the context of education, the Bachelor of Clinical Pharmacy Study Program and Pharmacist Professional Study Program at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) are known as one of the best private pharmacy programs in the city of Medan. This reputation is supported by:
