UNPRI Faculty of Law and Medan District Court Hold Legal Discussion
Gordon Wagirin Sendjaja: Public Knowledge of Intellectual Property Rights Still Below Standard
The Faculty of Law (FH) of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) in collaboration with the Medan District Court (PN), on November 1, 2012 held a legal discussion with the theme "Law Enforcement and Economy Issues". The discussion was attended by the Head of the Medan District Court Erwin Mangatas Malau, S.H., M.H, Dean of FH UNPRI Tommy Leonard, SH., MKn, Permanent Lecturer of FH UNPRI Gordon Wagirin Sendjaja, SH., M.Hum., MKn, Subiharta (lecturer of FH UNPRI/judge of Medan District Court), a number of Judges of Medan District Court, Deputy Dean of FH UNPRI Theresia Simatupang, SH, M.Hum, Head of Study Program Ronald Hasudungan Sianturi, SH., MH., students of FH NPRI and other invitees.
On the same occasion, UNPRI FH permanent lecturer Gordon Wagirin Sendjaja explained about Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). According to him, so far the public's knowledge about IPR is still below standard.
According to Gordon, the lack of public knowledge about IPR is due to the lack of socialization from the government to the public.
He hopes that in the future the government must be more active in socializing it to the public. Moreover, currently IPR is a hot issue that is often discussed. Because, we often hear cases of piracy of works created by local artists to counterfeiting of production goods.
In fact, as we know, said Gordon, our country has provided legal protection to individuals or groups of people or to legal entities.
Gordon added that IPR violations in the form of piracy, counterfeiting in the context of Copyright and Trademarks are clearly detrimental to economic actors, especially those that will harm the legitimate owners of the intellectual property rights. "Not only that, consumers and healthy market mechanisms will also be disrupted by IPR violations," he said.
To reduce the occurrence of IPR violations, he said, there must be an effort to curb the rampant piracy, namely by enforcing IPR. In this case, there needs to be concern for IPR.
Meanwhile, the Dean of FH Unpri Tommy Leonard SH MKn accompanied by the Chairperson of the Committee Hasudungan Sianturi SH MH added that the implementation of the legal discussion in collaboration with the Medan District Court was one of Unpri's efforts to socialize IPR to the community, especially to Unpri students.
Meanwhile, the Dean of FH Unpri Tommy Leonard SH MKn accompanied by the Chairperson of the Committee Hasudungan Sianturi SH MH added that the implementation of the legal discussion in collaboration with the Medan District Court was one of Unpri's efforts to socialize IPR to the community, especially to Unpri students.
Thus, said Tommy, students and lecturers in Unpri environment know about actual economic law issues, which can then be applied in the work environment.
Tommy also mentioned that the legal discussion held was a follow-up to the MoU with the Medan District Court some time ago.
In this case, said Tommy, the Head of the Medan District Court welcomed the legal discussion activity held at the Unpri campus on Jalan Sekip Medan.
"In following up on this cooperation, we will always carry out various activities such as seminars and discussions concerning law and law enforcement." said Tommy convincingly.
