2000 UNPRI Students Enliven Seminar: Gen Z, the Drivers of Innovation and Creativity
Inspirational Seminar: Gen Z UNPRI and the Challenges of the Modern World, Open Day UNPRI 2025
Medan, A total of 2000 students of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) from various faculties enlivened the seminar entitled "Gen Z, the Driver of Innovation and Creativity", as well as filling the OPEN DAY UNPRI 2025 event, which was held on the 10th floor of the UNPRI Main Hall, Jln. Cover No. 3 Medan, Tuesday (4/2/2025).
Permanent Lecturer of the Faculty of Economics UNPRI, Jolan B. Amelia Sinaga, SE.MM, MAk who appeared as a resource person, appeared neat and communicative using Gen Z language to Gen Z students who were dominated by students of the Faculty of Economics UNPRI, then also followed by students from other faculties, and some high school students in Medan City.
At the beginning of the seminar, Jolan conveyed the phenomenon of 2024 where a number of companies in Indonesia fired employees from Gen Z, on the grounds that they were not resilient, did not feel at home working, even 34% did not come to work on the first day without confirmation.
On the other hand, there has been a change in Gen Z's expectations of the world of work, Gen Z has strong digital skills, has innovation and creativity in the workplace because they have an out of the box mindset, and cares about mental well-being.
According to Jolan, the current public view of Gen Z is that this generation is used to digital technology since birth (digital native), has a dependency on technology but with the current version of technology, namely gadgets and social media, cares about society (actively voices social and environmental concerns).
Jolan further explained the characteristics of Gen Z, namely independent and practical, multitasking especially women, digital native, creative and innovative, FOMO (fear of Missing Out) or fear of being called out of date, tolerant and inclusive and goal-oriented or ambitious).
“Gen Z does not compartmentalize friendships, does not limit themselves in socializing, feels like close friends with other people on social media, but it is a bit difficult to answer. When I was teaching, I once asked the students in class if they understood, but they didn't answer. When I asked later, they said we had answered in our hearts. Who knows in your heart, it feels like you are in another world", he said making students laugh out loud realizing the truth of their character.
So that Gen Z understands and realizes their true condition, Jolan explained the SWOT analysis approach, so that seminar participants understand what their strengths/advantages, weaknesses, opportunities that can be entered and challenges or threats that must be faced.
Strength (S) or Gen Z's strengths/advantages are technology savvy, adaptable, creative & innovative, good digital communication, flexible and multitasking.
Weaknesses (W) or Gen Z's weaknesses include lack of face-to-face communication and need to be improved, sometimes impulsive, lack of formal work experience, vulnerable to hoaxes, potential social media burden.
Opportunity (O) or opportunities that can be utilized by Gen Z, the creative industry is growing rapidly and can be utilized, global collaboration is easy, digital skills are in high demand, big entrepreneurial opportunities, and an active role in social issues.
Threat (T) namely the threats/challenges that will be faced by Gen Z include very tight competition, rapidly changing technology, negative stigma in society, need for increased competence.
For this reason, Jolan conveyed Gen Z's strategy to compete in the job market, including increasing soft skills is very important, a professional work ethic (responsible, time discipline), effective collaboration and being ready to accept criticism, conducting competency development (courses or training), and the importance of building personal branding.
Then how can Gen Z become a driver of innovation and creativity? Jolan asked seminar participants to develop AI-based technology applications, create educational videos, be independent, collaborate across sectors, and partner with startup companies.
"In addition, join a useful community both online and in the real world to exchange ideas, dare to innovate without fear of failure, make sure your work is needed by many users, master Mandarin, get certificates from various aspects," he said
After delivering his presentation, several students also asked questions, such as Ezra Nikolas from the Management Study Program, FE UNPRI, Ocha Amelia from the Accounting Study Program, FE UNPRI, and Cindy Zebua from the Faculty of Public Health, UNPRI, then answered by Jolan who was guided by Dr. Salman as the moderator, Head of the Management Study Program, FE UNPRI.
