UNPRI and the North Sumatra Language Center Hold a Library Literacy Movement

In collaboration with the North Sumatra Provincial Language Center, Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) held a Library Literacy Movement on Thursday and Friday (August 21-22, 2025), visiting several high schools and explaining the important role of libraries.

The Head of the UNPRI Library, Siti Haritsah Lubis, S.Sos, explained the Library Literacy Movement, an initiative to increase reading interest and literacy skills in the community through library activities. "These activities include fostering a reading habit, such as reading for 15 minutes before class, providing an engaging collection of books, organizing reading corners, regular library visits, writing competitions, and book discussions. The goal is to foster a reading culture, improve critical thinking skills, and broaden the community's horizons, all of which are part of the National or School Literacy Movement," she said.

Siti Haritah Lubis, S.Sos., added that UNPRI Library staff visited a number of schools, as mentioned above. "Our staff explained the goals of the Library Literacy Movement. For example, they held book exhibitions, writing competitions, discussions, and book reviews. They trained individuals to evaluate, process, and use information effectively, increase knowledge, insight, and vocabulary through various types of reading, develop sustainable reading and writing habits, and help individuals continue learning and develop throughout life," she emphasized.

Siti Haritah Lubis, S.Sos., added that libraries play a central role in the literacy movement by providing access to information, supporting literacy activities, and providing a varied and engaging book collection tailored to users' interests. The library also plays a role in promoting literacy activities both within and outside the institution.

UNPRI Library staff explained the facilities available at the UNPRI Library and the study programs available on the UNPRI campus. On the same occasion, UNPRI staff also provided motivation for students to continue their education at UNPRI.

On the first day, Thursday (August 21, 2025), UNPRI Library staff, Nanda and Glen, met with Lisnadayani Hasibuan, S.Pd., SMA, the principal of Nur Hasanah Medan Private School, located at Jl. Garu 1, No. 28, Medan Amplas. At the school, they explained the Library Literacy Movement to the students of Nur Hasanah Private School.

That same day, Esra and Nisa, staff from the UNPRI Library, met with Hadi Muslim, S.Sos., the principal of the National Development Private High School in Medan, located on Jl. Pukat Banting II, Bantan Village, Medan Tembung District. Separately, Siti and Iqbal visited the Bandung Bandar Setia Private High School, also carrying out the same activity: explaining the purpose, goals, and importance of the Library Literacy Movement to their students.

On the second day, Friday (8/22/2025), Rahmi, Maidana, Esra, and Nisa from UNPRI met with Heriana Nadapdap, S.Pd., Principal of Bersinar Private High School located at Jln. Perkusi no. 25 Selambo, Amplas. Meanwhile, Nanda and Glen met with Khairani Islamiyah, M.Pd., Principal of IRA Medan Tembung Private High School. UNPRI staff who visited Bersinar Private High School and IRA Private High School in Medan Tembung conducted the same activity, encouraging students to understand the importance of libraries through the Library Literacy Movement.

Students from several high schools visited by the UNPRI Library Team stated that the Library Literacy Movement helped them become progressive individuals, think critically, and consider continuing their education at university. They also gained valuable experience from the UNPRI Library team regarding the Library and the Language Center.

These students hope to study at UNPRI in the future, as it aligns with their aspirations and offers comprehensive facilities. They aspire to become graduates who not only master their chosen disciplines but also understand sound knowledge and science.
