The Plantation Fund Management Agency Encourages UNPRI Faculty of Agrotechnology Students to Advance the National Palm Oil Industry

BPDPKS and the Faculty of Agrotechnology, UNPRI, collaborate to encourage students to innovate and contribute to the development of a sustainable palm oil industry in Indonesia.

The Faculty of Agro Technology at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) reaffirmed its commitment to providing inspiring and applicable learning experiences. Held at the Mini Hall, 10th floor of UNPRI’s Main Campus, Jalan Sampul No. 3, Medan Petisah, on Thursday (October 9, 2025), the public lecture featured Nugroho Adi Wibowo, Head of the Planning and Program Development Division of the Palm Oil Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS).

The event, attended by all Agrotechnology and Agribusiness students—both programs now accredited “Excellent” by BAN-PT—was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Agro Technology, Dr. Suratni Afrianti, S.T., M.Si. The session was moderated by Andry Admaja Tarigan, S.P., M.Si. (Head of Agrotechnology Study Program) and hosted by Laura Juita Pinem, S.P., M.M. (Head of Agribusiness Study Program).

In her remarks, Dr. Suratni expressed appreciation for BPDPKS’s partnership with UNPRI, particularly through scholarship programs supporting human resource development in the palm oil sector. Approximately 90 students from the 2025 cohort received the scholarship, bringing the total to more than 300 recipients since the collaboration began.

She hoped that this lecture would enrich students’ understanding of palm oil and its role in Indonesia’s economy. Collaborations with partners like BPDPKS reflect UNPRI’s ongoing efforts to deliver quality, modern, and innovation-oriented education rooted in sustainability.

The lecture, titled “Palm Oil Fund Support for the Development of Indonesia’s National Palm Oil Industry”, highlighted BPDPKS’s initiatives in strengthening human resource quality and competitiveness in the palm oil industry. Nugroho explained that the collaboration between BPDPKS and UNPRI has entered its third year. Out of 4,000 national scholarship recipients, UNPRI is among the universities supported, covering living allowances, accommodation, tuition, uniforms, training, practicum, final projects, graduation, transportation, and certification costs.

“UNPRI students should be proud to study at one of the best universities trusted by strategic national institutions like BPDPKS. University life is not only about earning a degree but also about building networks and becoming part of Indonesia’s globally competitive palm oil industry. Palm oil is a strategic commodity that touches almost every aspect of modern life, and UNPRI’s young generation must continue to innovate,” Nugroho said.

He further outlined the vast potential of Indonesia’s palm oil industry, which serves as a backbone of the national economy, with 16.8 million hectares of plantations, 47 million tons of CPO production, and exports valued at USD 27.76 billion, employing over 16.7 million workers across 26 provinces.

Palm oil products are essential to daily life but often face negative campaigns from global competitors in other vegetable oil industries such as soybean, rapeseed, sunflower, and coconut. Palm oil derivatives are found in toothpaste, soap, cosmetics, margarine, and even biodiesel.

Nugroho also discussed challenges in the national palm oil industry, including low smallholder productivity, global black campaigns, and lagging research and downstream innovation compared to Malaysia. To address these, BPDPKS continues implementing strategic programs such as replanting support (IDR 60 million per hectare), distribution of superior seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, entrepreneurship training, and ISPO (Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil) certification.

In addition to farmer training programs, BPDPKS provides research grants and palm oil innovation competitions for university students, offering up to IDR 20 million per project to encourage youth innovation in the plantation sector.

Closing the session, Nugroho delivered a motivational message: “Your body may tire, your heart may break, and your eyes may cry. But all the struggles will be repaid with the proud smiles of your parents on your graduation day.”

The public lecture, opened with a traditional Malay welcoming dance and concluded with the Toba Batak Tortor dance performed by UNPRI Creative students, reaffirmed the Faculty of Agro Technology’s role as a leading faculty producing professional graduates with socio-technopreneurship values and real contributions to the sustainable future of Indonesia’s palm oil industry.
