Japanese neurosurgeon Prof. Eiju Watanabe MD PhD said that 10-20 percent of epilepsy sufferers must undergo surgery.
This was conveyed by Prof. Eiju Watanabe MD PhD at the International Seminar "Surgical Aspect Of Neurology: A New Approach To Epilepsy" held by the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Prima Indonesia (Unpri), Monday, April 2, 2012 at Griya Dome Medan.
Present at the seminar were the Supervisor, dr. I Nyoman Ehrich Lister, MKes, AIFM, Head of BPH Unpri Tommy Leonard, SH, MKn, Prof. dr. Djakobus Tarigan, AAI, DAAK, Dean of FKG Prof. drg. Monang Panjaitan, MS, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Unpri dr. Firman Sitepu, SpA.
On that occasion, Prof. Eiju Watanabe MD PhD explained at length about epilepsy in front of hundreds of FK Unpri students.
According to him, the provision of anti-epileptic drugs is very important.
He also mentioned that epilepsy is known as one of the oldest diseases in the world and ranks second from nerve diseases. With good management, most sufferers can be freed from their disease, but for this there are many obstacles.
"Patients can be treated with surgery. So, the assumption in society that epilepsy is a hereditary disease is not true considering that it can be cured by surgery," he said again.
In addition, also present were Dr. Setia Budi Tarigan Sp S (neurosurgeon), Sri Hartini SPsi MPsi (Psychological Impact To Epileptic), and Yeni Dewita S Kep. On that occasion, Dr. Setia Budi Tarigan Sp S explained that epilepsy can reduce the quality of life, therefore, effective treatment is needed.
Setia Budi Tarigan added that there is no prohibition for women with epilepsy to get married and get pregnant.

Meanwhile, Sri Hartini S.Psi, M.Psi said that around 50 million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy and 90 percent of People With Epilepsy (ODE) are found in developing countries, and most ODE have not received the treatment they need. Half of the total cases of epilepsy have been suffered since the patient was a child or teenager.
She said that the WHO report on misperceptions about ODE was found in every region or country. Misunderstandings, discrimination and negative social stigma make ODE trapped in darkness and tend to close themselves off.
She said these problems occur in almost every country and culture.
She also explained that epilepsy is a neurological disease that can cause a person to experience repeated seizures. Episodes of seizures can cause a person's attention and behavior to change. Symptoms of epilepsy vary widely. From seizures to emotional changes.P10
