Socialization of the 20 International Doctoral Program:
UNPRI's Efforts Towards Going International
Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) held a socialization of the 20 International Doctoral Program to support UNPRI's initiative to go international. The event held at the Main Hall of the UNPRI Campus, Jalan Sampul 4, Medan City on Thursday, May 17, 2023, is a concrete step in realizing the vision of campus internationalization.
In his remarks, the Head of the UNPRI Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM), Edy Fachrial, S.Si., M.Si., CIQaR, who is also the person in charge of the program, explained that the purpose of this program is to recruit 20 lecturers who are graduates from abroad who are in accordance with UNPRI's efforts to go international by 2033.
In the initial stage of the program, the 20 selected lecturers will receive training and guidance related to the obstacles often faced by lecturers, namely English language skills, preparing proposals, and building connections and relationships in order to get a letter of acceptance.
One of the speakers at this event was Sadarman Gea, Ph.D., a lecturer at the University of North Sumatra (USU). In his presentation, he discussed several obstacles faced by foreign students, including language proficiency, lack of adequate track record in publications, and financing issues. Then, his material provided several examples of study abroad requirements and scholarship options that can be chosen by lecturers who wish to continue their studies abroad. This aims to provide comprehensive information and make it easier for lecturers to prepare themselves to continue their higher education abroad.
First, Sadarman Gea highlighted the language proficiency obstacle often experienced by foreign students. Language is an important factor in communication, presentations, and writing academic assignments. Limitations in language skills can be an obstacle for students in understanding lecture materials and interacting with fellow students and lecturers.
In addition, Sadarman Gea also emphasized the lack of adequate track record in publications as an obstacle for foreign students. A good academic track record, including publications in international journals, can increase their chances of getting study and research opportunities abroad. Lack of experience and publications can be a limiting factor in the global competition for desired scholarships and study opportunities.
The issue of financing was also a focus in Sadarman Gea's presentation. The cost of education and living abroad can be a significant burden for students. Sometimes, overseas students face difficulties in finding adequate sources of funding, either through scholarships or personal funding. This can be a barrier for those who have high potential and enthusiasm to continue their studies abroad.
With the launch of the 20 International Doctoral Program, it is hoped that UNPRI can further improve the quality of education and research at the international level. This program is also expected to help UNPRI achieve their big goal of realizing UNPRI go International, so that they can establish wider collaboration with educational and research institutions in various countries.
