FPPTI North Sumatra Holds International Workshop: Implementation of Fast Search Technology Using AI in Indonesian College Libraries at UNPRI

Medan, The Indonesian Higher Education Library Forum (FPPTI) of the North Sumatra Region held an International Workshop with the theme "Implementation of Fast Search Technology Using Artificial Intelligence in Indonesian Higher Education Libraries", Tuesday (12/17/2024), at the Mini Hall, 10th Floor, UNPRI Campus, Jln. Sampul No. 3 Medan.

To discuss the above theme, two important speakers were presented, namely Dr. Mohd Faizal Hamzah (University of Malaya) and Dr. Amalia, S.T., M.T. (University of North Sumatra), with moderator Diky Aditya, S.Sos (Medan Area University).

Dr. Mohd Faizal Hamzah with the topic “AI is Important for Librarians & Researchers”, explained the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) for researchers and librarians in increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the research process.

According to him, AI can be used in various stages of the research workflow, such as topic identification through trend analysis using NLP and machine learning, literature searches with tools such as Semantic Scholar, and reference compilation with Zotero or Mendeley.

“In addition, AI helps in summarizing articles, creating data visualizations with Tableau, detecting plagiarism through Turnitin, and selecting publication journals using Elsevier Journal Finder. AI tools also allow researchers to disseminate research results through the creation of abstract videos, infographics, and social media automation. With AI, manual tasks can be automated, so researchers can focus more on in-depth analysis and innovation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Amalia, S.T., M.T with the topic "Implementation of Fast Search Technology Using Artificial Intelligence in College Libraries", stated that the implementation of fast search technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) in college libraries aims to increase efficiency in searching for information sources.

“By leveraging technologies such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), machine learning, semantic search, and text-to-speech, AI helps speed up the search process, provides personalized recommendations, and supports multilingual access,” he said.

He cited examples of its application including the AI catalog system at the National Library of Singapore, book recommendations at the New York Public Library, and the digitization of archives at the British Library. In addition, future smart libraries are expected to use technologies such as facial recognition, chatbots, and augmented reality to create a more interactive and intuitive user experience.

"The implementation of AI strengthens the role of libraries as knowledge centers in the digital era by providing faster, more accurate and inclusive services," he explained..

The Chairperson of the Indonesian Higher Education Library Forum (FPPTI) for the North Sumatra Region, Laila Hadri Nasution, S.sos., M.p, expressed her gratitude to UNPRI for facilitating the activities of FPPTI. In the future, FPPTI will continue to create activities so that it can network with other university libraries. And in the future, librarians will also become members of FPPTI.

Abdi Dharma, S.Kom., M.Kom representing the Rector of UNPRI said that the use of AI in Indonesia has started since the 1980s, but is still limited and only for certain uses. "The development of AI in Indonesia is getting faster along with the development of the era and the increasing use of the internet, but in the future there will be fewer jobs because AI is so sophisticated," he added.

The librarian of Medan State Polytechnic, Lauren, said that the event was extraordinary, coupled with extraordinary speakers. "I hope that in the future there will be more events like this. FPPTI North Sumatra is an innovative and collaborative forum for librarians, academics, and practitioners in developing modern library services that are relevant to the needs of the times. FPPTI North Sumatra is expected to encourage the application of the latest technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and big data, to create smart libraries that are able to provide fast, accurate, and inclusive services," he hoped..

Lauren added that this forum could be a creative space to generate fresh ideas in developing digital literacy programs, librarian training, and collaboration between libraries at the national and international levels.

"With the spirit of togetherness and innovation, FPPTI North Sumatra is expected to strengthen the role of libraries as centers for learning, working, and innovation that support the advancement of education and research in the North Sumatra region," he said.

The workshop was attended by 150 participants, consisting of Library Science students, Librarians throughout North Sumatra and Library Observers, and several other important invitees, such as the Chairperson of the FPPTI for the North Sumatra Region Laila Hadri Nasution, S.sos., M.p, WR I UNPRI Abdi Dharma, S.Kom., M.Kom.
