Lecturer PKM Team
Socialize the Making of Solid and Liquid Organic Fertilizer Using Compost for PKK Mothers
A team of lecturers from Quality University and Prima Indonesia University (UNPRI) carried out Community Service activities in an effort to build public awareness to care for the environment. The basic thing that can be done is to dispose of waste in its place and sort organic waste (waste) to be processed into useful materials and also compost.
Organic waste is one of the important issues in efforts to preserve the environment and reduce the negative impacts of climate change. Throughout the world, the production of organic waste is increasing along with population growth and urbanization.
Therefore, concrete actions are needed to reduce the environmental impacts resulting from organic waste. One effective approach is to involve local communities in organic waste management. In Perumnas Simalingkar Village, Pancur Batu District, this effort has been realized through the empowerment program for environmentally conscious PKK mothers. The empowerment program for environmentally conscious PKK mothers is an initiative that aims to educate and involve PKK mothers in efforts to reduce organic waste and increase its added value. This program is a collaboration between Quality University and Prima Indonesia University, with the support of qualified lecturers and also assisted by students of the Agrotechnology Study Program at Quality University.
PKK mothers have an important role in household management, including waste management. They can be agents of change in sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
This program aims to empower PKK mothers with the knowledge and skills needed to properly manage organic waste and turn it into a source of added value for their communities. The empowerment program for environmentally conscious PKK mothers involves a series of steps that actively involve the community.
The first step is to provide training and education to PKK mothers. Lecturers from Quality University, Robert Sinaga, S.TP, MSi, and Ir. Riduan Sembiring, M.MA, together with lecturers from Universitas Prima Indonesia, Melfrianti Romauli Purba, SP, M.M, assisted by a team of lecturers provided basic knowledge about organic waste management, organic waste composition, and composting techniques, and Agrotechnology Study Program students were also involved in providing this training.
Robert Sinaga STP MSi accompanied by Ir. Riduan Sembiring MMA and Melfrianti Romauli Purba, SP, MM said that after gaining sufficient knowledge, PKK mothers began collecting organic waste in their respective homes. "They use special containers for organic waste so that it is separated from other waste. This is an initial step to reduce the mixing of organic waste with non-organic waste," he said.
He said that PKK mothers were taught about composting techniques. "They understand the importance of composting in converting organic waste into compost that is useful as organic fertilizer for agriculture. Lecturers and students helped in establishing a composting system in the village," he explained. Admittedly, this program not only provides initial training, but also involves ongoing mentoring and monitoring. Lecturers and students make regular visits to Perumnas Simalingkar Village to assist and ensure that organic waste management practices are running well.
"In addition to reducing organic waste, this program also encourages PKK mothers to develop value-added products from the compost produced. This can include compost fertilizer that is sold or used to increase the productivity of gardening activities at home or local agriculture," he said again.
Results and Impacts
It was explained that the empowerment program for environmentally conscious PKK mothers had provided significant positive results. Among them, the reduction of organic waste. "Since this program began, there has been a significant reduction in the amount of organic waste entering landfills. This has a positive impact on the local environment and reduces waste management costs," he said. Increased environmental understanding. PKK mothers who have been involved in this program have a better understanding of the importance of organic waste management and its impact on the environment. “They have also become environmental ambassadors in their communities,” she said.
Then, increasing economic welfare. By developing value-added products from compost, PKK mothers have experienced an increase in their economic welfare. They have the opportunity to earn additional income from selling these products. Finally, increasing community cooperation. This program has strengthened cooperation and solidarity within the community. IPKK mothers work together to achieve a common goal, namely better waste management.
The empowerment program for environmentally conscious PKK mothers in Perumnas Simalingkar Village, Pancur Batu District, is a real example of how local communities can play an active role in managing organic waste and the environment. Through education, training, and mentoring, PKK mothers have been able to reduce organic waste, increase environmental understanding, and in the next stage are expected to improve their economic welfare.
"This program is a positive step towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management. Hopefully similar initiatives can be adopted in other communities to raise awareness of more communities that care about the environment," he concluded.
