UNPRI Architecture Students Commemorate National Design Sketch Day with the Theme "Architecture Grows with Nature"
Students of the Architecture Study Program at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) celebrated National Sketch Day through art and design activities with the theme 'Architecture Grows with Nature' as a manifestation of harmony between humans, space, and the environment.
A total of 40 Architecture students and 5 lecturers from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST) of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) commemorated the Sketch Day of Design and Sensibility with the theme “Architecture Growing with Nature” on Monday, September 22, 2025, at Taman Kebun Bunga, Jalan Candi Borobudur, Medan.
According to the Head of the Architecture Study Program, Dr. Meyga Fithri Handayani Nst, S.T., M.T., the event was a creative student activity aimed at developing sensitivity to nature and culture through observation, sketching, and reflection processes.
During the activity, students went directly into the field to create sketches of natural and built spaces that reflect harmony between architecture and nature. Their observations were expressed through visual artworks and design concepts highlighting sustainability values. The works were exhibited in an open showcase accompanied by discussions and reflections with lecturers and practitioners to strengthen students’ understanding of architecture that grows in harmony with nature.
Dr. Meyga added that the purpose of the Sketch Day was to build environmental and social awareness among new architecture students through creative and reflective activities. It also trains students’ observational and visualization skills while instilling sustainability values in the design process.
She explained that the event covered four key topics interrelated in shaping students’ understanding of the architectural world:
First, in Getting to Know Architecture More Closely, students learned that architecture is not merely about constructing physical forms but about creating meaningful spaces that blend art, science, and empathy toward humans and the environment.
Second, in Thinking Critically and Creatively to Produce Innovative Works, students were trained to analyze design problems and produce original, efficient, and sustainable solutions.
Third, Local Architecture with Nature emphasized local wisdom, environmental potential, and harmony between buildings and nature as the foundation of identity-based, eco-friendly design.
Fourth, The World Needs Architects Sensitive to Users underlined that architects must have empathy and sensitivity to users’ needs so that each work can provide meaningful, inclusive, and human-centered spatial experiences.
Representatives from the Youth and Sports Office who attended expressed appreciation to UNPRI Architecture for organizing this creative event as a platform for students to channel their talents, ideas, and environmental awareness.
They noted that such activities are essential in shaping young generations who are not only intellectually intelligent but also sensitive to sustainability and the balance between humans and nature.
“This event was a memorable experience for us as architecture students. We learned directly from the environment, understood how architecture can grow with nature, and enhanced our observational and sketching skills,” said several students. The sense of togetherness was warm and inspiring as they shared ideas and perspectives on sustainability in architecture.
UNPRI Architecture students hope that this event will continue annually with diverse and challenging themes, inspiring creativity, environmental care, and meaningful architectural expression.
The event was also attended by representatives from Diaspora Sumut and UNPRI officials, including Prof. Ir. Bhakti Alamsyah, M.T., Ph.D.; Sari Desi Minta Ito Simbolon, S.T., M.T.; Rahma Wardani Siregar, S.T., M.T.; and Destia Farahdina, S.T., M.T.
